After a Holiday break the PGA Tour is back in session with the Sentry Tournament of Champions kicking off the 2021 portion of the schedule at a familiar location. The reduced number of events in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic opened the field to all qualifiers for last year’s TOUR Championship as well as anyone who won an official PGA Tour event over the past 12 months. The exclusive field of golfers will attack the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui with every player getting 72 holes of golf in paradise. Defending champ Justin Thomas was positioned just behind reigning FedExCup champ Dustin Johnson on the odds board with Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele all listed at 10/1 or shorter on the opening lines. Odds Analysis
Cameron Champ +4500
With such a strong and small field it makes sense to stay close to the top of odds board when looking at an outright winner. But where’s the fun in that? Take a dive deeper down the list and you’ll find Champ at an inviting price. Course length and generous fairways will allow Champ to swing away, and few do it better. He ranks fourth on Tour in driving distance and had some strong showings before the break with a T8 at the ZOZO and a top-20 at the Masters. He also placed among the top-15 in both starts at this event with one bad round ruining what could have been a much finish. Fix that problem and we have a nice payout.
Bryson DeChambeau +900
Since we touched on the theme of distance why not mention the best on Tour. DeChambeau outclubs everyone and we’ll probably see a couple of 400-yard drives this week. And as long as he focuses on the overall game and not just showing off with his impressive drives, he should contend for a trophy. The one drawback could be the amount of time he’s been off, not pegging it up since a T34 at the Masters in mid-November. DeChambeau finished seventh here in 2019 and is still basking in his U.S. Open win from September, but a new year brings new beginnings.
Tony Finau +2500
Kapalua seems like a perfect fit for Finau’s game and we’ll get a chance to see if that’s the case. He played well in his only visit collecting a top-10 in 2017 shooting 14-under. And Finau enters off a strong close to last year with three top-11 finishes in his last five starts. He’s been one of the most consistent players and I find myself often backing him because that next Tour victory is right around the corner.
Dustin Johnson +525
There isn’t much value in DJ at this price but how can you not look at him. He’s the hottest player on the planet since the COVID restart with wins at the TOUR Championship and the Masters among his four titles. He’s also a two-time winner at Kapalua with eight straight finishes among the top-10.
Xander Schauffele +1000
Another course stallion is Schauffele, who has a win and a playoff loss in his last two starts at Kapalua. One thing to note about the X-man is that he tested positive for COVID just before Christmas and was sequestered cutting into his preparation. That could mean nothing though, since we saw a few players return to the links after dealing with the virus to win a tournament. Schauffele is another player who excelled before the Holidays and the shutdown probably reinvigorated his game.
Course: Plantation Course at Kapalua – 7,596-yards, par-73
The course has hosted this event since 1999 but it underwent a major renovation ahead of last year’s edition. Still, there weren’t many surprises for the field, though the redesigned course saw Justin Thomas produce the worst winning 72-hole score since 2006 by shooting 14-under. The added length is negated by elevation and by playing at par 73 and the layout is known more for its tricky lies with one hole going uphill and the next downhill. Golfers also have to contend with coastal winds, which are always a factor. For the most part the fairways are generous and the big sticks will be used a lot over the four days. The greens are known to be slow and tricky, and the players that manage the short grass will have an advantage in the final standings.
