After a Holiday break the PGA Tour is back in session with the Sentry Tournament of Champions kicking off the 2022 portion of the schedule. An impressive list of winners from 2021 is ready to attack the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui with 38 of the 39 TOUR champs from 2021 competing. The only player eligible that’s not in the field is Rory McIlroy. Harris English is back to defend the title he won in a playoff, but is positioned further down the odds board. World No. 1 Jon Rahm is the betting favorite with Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa the only players with shorter than 10/1 odds. Phil Mickelson makes his first appearance at this event in two decades looking to add a third title to his resume. Odds Analysis
Tony Finau +2605
The course plays to big hitters and Finau can smack the ball as well as anyone. Most of the bigger names on Tour took time off over the Holidays so we don’t really know what to expect, but Finau has been one of the most consistent players over the last few years and I don’t expect that to change. Like we’ve seen from Finau, he bounced back from an opening 74 last year going 12-under the last three rounds. One bad round here puts you at a disadvantage and Finau knows he has to be at the top of his game from the start.
Phil Mickelson +14050
Outside of his win at the PGA Championship that got him an invite, Mickelson didn’t do much on Tour. He had one other finish inside the top-20 last season and opened the new campaign with a T36 in the Fortinet Championship. But if you recall he was a huge underdog to win at Kiawah Island and the payout was massive. Lefty has won this event twice, though they were before the move to Maui, and a small investment could yield another huge payday.
Collin Morikawa +905
The young man has accomplished a lot in his short career and he has the chance to become the No. 1 player in the world depending on the results this weekend. That alone should be enough to back Morikawa, but take into account two top-10s in his two visits and a blistering start to the season and I wonder why he isn’t the favorite in the outright market. Runner-up at the CJ CUP and a T7 in the ZOZO in October were impressive, as is his game.
Xander Schauffele +1265
He didn’t win a Tour event last year but Schauffele qualified thanks to his gold medal winning performance in the Olympics over the summer. That might be bigger than a Tour win anyway. But don’t take anything away from the X-man, who has torn up the Plantation Course with a win, runner-up and fifth-place showing in his last three starts. There is some value with his price and I like his chances to reach the winner’s circle.
Jordan Spieth +2275
Like Schauffele, Spieth has enjoyed success on this layout with three top-10s in his last three starts, including a win in 2016. Of all the players in the field with at least 10 rounds played on the Plantation Course, Spieth has the most strokes gained. And his career resurrection has been something to behold. If X-man has value at his price, Spieth is a steal and I’m more confident backing him for the outright and throwing down on other markets as well.
Course: Plantation Course at Kapalua – 7,596 yards, par 73
The course has hosted this event since 1999 but underwent a major renovation ahead of the 2019 edition. Still, there weren’t many surprises for the field, though the redesigned course saw Justin Thomas produce the worst winning 72-hole score since 2006. English and Joaquin Niemann both shot 25-under last year with the winner decided in a playoff for the second straight year. The additional length is negated by elevation and by playing at par 73, and the layout is known more for its tricky lies with one hole going uphill and the next downhill. Golfers also have to contend with coastal winds, which are always a factor. For the most part the fairways are generous and the big sticks will be used over the four days. The greens are known to be slow and tricky, and the players that manage the short grass will have an advantage.
