The annual PGA Tour trip to Las Vegas is a go with a full field gathering in the Nevada desert this week for the Shriners Children’s Open. The third of seven tournaments in the new FedExCup Fall schedule, there is an emphasis on finishing among the top 125 to retain full Tour status when the 2024 season opens in January. Defending champ Tom Kim and Swedish standout Ludvig Aberg are neck and neck at the top of the outright odds board. Kim matched a tournament scoring record last year winning by three shots. And low scores have been plentiful at TPC Summerlin with the past five winners at 21-under or better. The competition will be stiff making for interesting matchups. Need to Know
TPC Summerlin plays 7,255 yards at par 71 and doesn’t offer much resistance. If the weather cooperates scores will plummet and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see -20 or better at the top of the leaderboard again. The course is annually one of the easiest par 71s on Tour with last year’s scoring average of 69 the highest in four years. Kim last year and Sungjae Im before that tied the tournament scoring record with their victory margins of three shots and four shots respectively the biggest since Webb Simpson’s 6-swing win in 2013. The hard part is predicting which player has the low score since the field is one of the deepest we’ve seen. Some say course experience is a bigger factor than course form. But knowing how to play altitude and wind will easily make up a few strokes. The elevation shortens the track and levels the playing field so we’re likely to see more irons with an emphasis put on placement over distance.
Shriners Children’s Open Matchup Picks
Si Woo Kim -110 vs. Cameron Davis
Four players with the last name Kim are in the field so you better get the right one when placing a wager. And it turns out I’m backing two of them in my matchups. I have Si Woo first since I think we’re about to see what he can do now that he’s healthy. He enjoyed his finest season on Tour with a win at the Sony Open one of five top 10s among his 11 top 25s. He capped the season with a gold medal along with Sungjae Im in the team competition at the Asian Games.
Adam Hadwin +110 vs. JJ Spaun
I’m always looking for value and Hadwin at plus-odds in this matchup stands out. He was up and down over the season which may have had something to do with his price, but his game fits the TPC Summerlin layout and he’s shown how well in previous visits. A longtime visitor to Vegas around this time, Hadwin returned in 2019 making all four cuts since with top 10s in each of the previous two years and three overall.
Tom Kim -110 vs. Ludvig Aberg
I had to pick this matchup between the favorites and two of the strongest young talents in the game. The only question is which player do I back? The prices in the matchup reflect the odds in the outright and you could flip a coin. Course experience is a factor which is why Kim gets the nod. He’s the defending champ and has yet to card a bogey at TPC Summerlin. Kim recovered from an ankle injury to compete in the FedExCup playoffs and recorded a pair of top 20s on the DP World Tour before hitting Vegas.
Tom Hoge +106 vs. Lucas Herbert
Some players have a style suitable for a certain layout. In this case Hoge fits the bill at TPC Summerlin. He showed us last year with an opening 63, but not finishing after holding an early lead and nabbing a T4 is the motivation that will propel Hoge. He’s also been solid on the lead in with top 15s in his last two worldwide starts.
Nicolai Hojgaard -110 vs. Emiliano Grillo
Sometimes having additional carrots on the end of the stick are what’s needed. For Hojgaard there are several and I think he’s ready for the challenge. He didn’t perform that well at the Ryder Cup, which was a disappointment, so he backed out of the Sanderson Farms to collect his thoughts. The renewed focus is needed as he pursues his 2024 PGA Tour card, which requires a non-member to finish among the top 125 in the fall standings.
