The PGA Tour stays in the Aloha State and expands the field for the Sony Open in Hawaii, which gets underway Thursday from the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. For the first time this year we’ll have a full field of over 140 golfers, which means significantly more matchup propositions on the betting table. However, the field is watered down from the star-studded cast we had assembled at Kapalua last week, though around 35 players are making the short trip to Oahu which could give them an advantage. One of those players is Chris Kirk, who looks to become the seventh player to sweep the Hawai’i swing. Kirk was a 1-shot winner at The Sentry and is featured in several matchups. Defending champ Si Woo Kim is further down the outright odds board. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
For those who played last week, the Waialae Country Club layout is much different than the one at Kapalua. At 7,044 yards, the course is short by Tour standards and will require players to club down. By contrast, the Plantation Course played at over 7,500 yards. The shorter yardage puts an emphasis on accuracy rather than distance, though it is an advantage to have played The Sentry with 17 of the previous 25 Sony Open champs having competed the week prior. Water comes into play on a few holes, but for the most part it’s a manageable course with seven of the past 11 winners scoring -20 or better. We’ve also witnessed a number of close finishes with the previous four tournaments decided by either a single shot or in a playoff.
Sony Open in Hawaii Matchup Picks
Ludvig Aberg +105 vs. Tyrrell Hatton
As one of the favorites in the full-field event I was mildly surprised to see Aberg at plus odds in this matchup. And therefore I grabbed him before the numbers moved. Making his debut at Kapalua last week, Aberg played himself out of contention with a third round 77, but like a true champion he responded with a closing 63 to at least regain some of the confidence he built with a steady fall performance that included a win at the RSM Classic among his four top 15s in as many starts.
Corey Conners +105 vs. Russell Henley
Loads of success at Waialae, along with a plus odds price, gives me enough incentive to back Conners. The Canadian was consistent last week but you have to go low at Kapalua. His game is more suited for the layout at Waialae, which is why he’s made the cut in all five starts with nothing worse than a T12 in his last four appearances. He earned a podium finish in 2019 and more than half of his last 12 rounds were 66 or lower.
Sahith Theegala +109 vs. Chris Kirk
These two battled to the end at Kapalua with Kirk emerging with a 1-shot win over Theegala. It’s hard to go back-to-back and given the circumstances of the season opener I would have to think Kirk is overjoyed by last week’s results and thus the title hangover is in effect. And besides, Theegala has been routinely at the top of the leaderboard during his brief career making him at plus odds an enticing pick.
Matt Kuchar +100 vs. Justin Rose
Always searching for value in my matchup picks Kuchar offers plenty at even-money. His success alone at Waialae is enough for me to back him, but throw in a fall that saw him ring up a T2 at the World Wide Technology Championship along with a T7 in Napa and I’m all in. A past winner of this event in 2019, Kuchar has racked up seven top 10s in his last 10 starts in this tournament.
J.T. Poston -132 vs. Si Woo Kim
I kinda deviated from my value picks in this matchup. I don’t normally back players priced as high as Poston but he had a solid four rounds last week to finish T5 continuing a trend from last season that saw him close the campaign with five top 10s in his last nine starts. He’s also been consistent at Waialae earning a top 20 in last year’s edition.
