The season opening swing through the Aloha State concludes this week when the PGA Tour makes the short jaunt to Oahu for the Sony Open in Hawaii, contested at the Waialae Country Club. The tournament also welcomes a full field after a limited number of players hit the links in Maui. Last week’s winner Hideki Matsuyama will attempt to become the seventh player to sweep the Hawaii swing following his record-setting 35-under. He is one of six past champions in the field having won in 2022 and will tee off as the betting favorite. Roughly half The Sentry field will compete, including Corey Conners who earned a T5 at Kapalua. Conners is one of three players boasting shorter than 20/1 odds on the opening line. Odds Analysis
Keegan Bradley +3157
He’s been a regular at this event since 2011 with mixed results. But a strong close to 2024 and a fast start with a T15 at The Sentry has put Bradley in the crosshairs. His best showing at Waialae was last year when he fell in a playoff. He then won the BMW Championship in August and was fifth at the unofficial Hero World Challenge in December ahead of his T15 at The Sentry. Two of his other top 15s at the Sony Open came in four starts prior to 2024.
Austin Eckroat +4105
Following up on a strong 2024 that included wins at the Cognizant Classic and the World Wide Technology Championship, Eckroat opened this year with a T15 at The Sentry where he was consistently good with three 68s and a 67. This is his third try at the Sony Open that produced a T12 in 2023. Over his last several events Eckroat has been as consistent as any player on Tour.
Tom Kim +2286
He hasn’t played since finishing as runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at the Hero World Challenge so there could be some concern there. We saw Kim reclaim the form that made him a phenom in the golf world with another runner-up at the Travelers among four top 15s in his last several starts. Kim was also in contention at the Olympics where he finished eighth. With expectations tempered a little bit we can expect Kim to play his game, which is typically really good.
Hideki Matsuyama +1001
I don’t typically back the favorite but few accomplished what Matsuyama did entering this event. Go back to the Olympics in August where he secured a bronze medal and this dude’s been on fire. Over his last six starts worldwide Matsuyama has two wins, a runner-up and an additional top 10. It’s a different course with different challenges, but Matsuyama broke the Tour’s 72-hole scoring record with his 35-under last week. He also has a win here just a few years ago.
Taylor Pendrith +4159
One of the rarest accomplishments in sports is scoring an albatross on the golf course. It takes a lot of luck but anyone who can do that deserves some recognition. Pendrith did that last week settling for a T13 at Kapalua continuing a run of five straight top 20s and eight straight top 25s. He began 2024 with a T10 at the Sony Open closing with a 66-65.
Course: Waialae Country Club – 7,044 yards, par 70
The course has hosted this event since 1965 making it one of the Tour’s longest running host venues. At just over 7,000 yards it’s short by Tour standards and those who competed last week at Kapalua will have to make an abrupt change to their approach. The beast at Kapalua measured over 7,500 yards at par 73 and played to the big hitters. Now we have the narrow layout at Waialae with its tree-lined fairways. The track will force players to club down with importance on accuracy to avoid numerous bunkers rather than distance. It’s a straightforward layout that has produced low scores in the past. In 2017 Justin Thomas won the prize with a record 27-under as one of six winners over the last 10 years to score 20-under or better. Grayson Murray won last year in a three-man playoff, the fifth time in nine years extra holes were required to determine the tournament winner.
