After missing a spot in last season’s schedule the PGA Tour returns to Memorial Park Golf Course for the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Much has changed since the last time the field gathered for this event in November 2022, notably the ascension of Scottie Scheffler as the game’s best player. Coming off wins in his last two starts and ranked No. 1 in the world, Scheffler is a huge favorite with odds as low as +250 in the outright market. He’s also a massive favorite in a tournament matchup with Wyndham Clark. And Clark is no slouch having finished runner-up to Scheffler in his last two outings. Tony Finau tore up the course for a record 72-hole score of 264 to win the last edition by four swings. There is a drop in odds after Scheffler leaving the rest of the field in catch up mode and setting up some intriguing matchups. Need to Know
Houston is one of the PGA Tour’s longest-running host cities with this tournament returning to Memorial Park in 2020 for the first time in nearly 60 years. Ahead of its return, the municipal course underwent a major renovation with bunkers, trees and water removed. The idea was to make the course playable for the public while still challenging enough for the pros. At 7,435 yards the course is lengthy causing some problems. With tricky slopes and bumpy greens it has been one of the toughest par 70s on Tour. Finau was masterful in 2022 carding a course record 62 in the second round en route to a record total 264. He led by as many as eight strokes on Sunday before settling for a 4-shot win the largest margin at this event since 2006.
Texas Children’s Houston Open Matchup Picks
Tony Finau -105 vs. Will Zalatoris
I took a look back at some notes I had from the last Houston Open and noticed I bet against Finau in a matchup. He entered the 2022 edition off a MC and was struggling by his standards. Though not as bad this season, Finau hasn’t been as sharp as we’ve seen him. But I’m not making the same mistake. Finau was exceptional at Memorial Park cruising to a victory and given the chance for another spin around the layout I’ll back him at a decent price in this matchup.
Jason Day +113 vs, Sahith Theegala
I’ve backed Theegala numerous times this season and he’s paid off for me. However, his price is in this matchup is steep and Day is on a run of decent form with history at Memorial Park that make me want to back him as a value option. Day has three top 10s this season and he’s gone T7-T16 in his last two starts on this track.
Tom Hoge -110 vs. Beau Hossler
Sometimes you have to play a hunch and I have a feeling Hoge is going to recover from his last two rounds at THE PLAYERS that caused him to tumble on the leaderboard. Up until then he was solid with five top 20s in his previous seven starts with paydays in every outing. He hasn’t played here in several years but the course won’t offer much resistance for his strong all-around game.
Cameron Champ +110 vs. Taylor Pendrith
Sticking with the theme of playing a hunch I’m doing exactly that by backing Champ. And the reasons make a lot of sense, at least to me. He’s a big time hitter that can take advantage of the course length and he won’t be in trouble with plenty of room to make those blasts. Also, Memorial Park doesn’t penalize putting as much allowing Champ to go for it. He’s also coming off a decent outing last week with a share of 26th that should’ve been better if not for a closing 74.
Luke List -110 vs. Thorbjorn Olesen
Very similar to my reasons for backing Champ I’m also taking list on my matchup picks. List actually proved a few years ago that his game fits the layout nicely leading the field in strokes gained: tee-to-green on his way to T11 in 2021. List is a long hitter that’s had success on similar type courses winning and he was runner-up at The Genesis last month so he’s not far removed from success.
