Following a two week stay in Hawai’i, the PGA Tour returns to the mainland for the first time in 2025 with The American Express in La Quinta, Calif. opening a five-tournament stay on the West Coast. The AMX brings with it the familiar pro-am and three-course format along with a star-studded cast. Pros will be grouped with amateurs for the first three rounds with cuts after 54 holes. Sunday’s final round will be played on the Pete Dye Stadium Course, which is considered the most difficult of the three. Back to defend his 2024 title is Nick Dunlap, who won by one-swing to become the first amateur to win this tournament and the first to win any PGA event since 1991. Justin Thomas and Sungjae Im opened as the co-betting favorites and the only players with shorter than 15/1 odds. Odds Analysis
Patrick Cantlay +1650
With a solid history at this tournament and a strong run of form over the last several months, Cantlay checks a lot of boxes. He secured his sixth top 15 finish among a run of eight straight top 25 by rallying from an opening 74 to finish T15 at The Sentry. He’s 5 for 5 in this event since 2019 with a runner-up in 2021 among his three top 10s.
Eric Cole +4550
I guess you have to catch Cole when he’s hot. He opened the Hawai’i Swing last year with a pair of top 15s and finished T21 in this event. After a disappointing opener Cole was consistently good for a solo fifth at the Sony Open just 2-shots off the pace. There is some unfinished business to deal with as well. Cole had a share of fifth after 54 holes in this one last year before stumbling with a closing 72.
Nico Echavarria +5000
The needle keeps pointing up for Echavarria and now might be a good time to take advantage of his sturdy play. There has to be some disappointment over the playoff loss at Waialae last week, but that should only fuel his desire. In a run of six starts that began with a win at the ZOZO Championship, Echavarria has three podiums and an additional T6 on his resume. You also can’t hate his price.
Adam Hadwin +6550
Hadwin has done just about everything but win this tournament since he debuted in 2015. Since then he has a pair of runners-up, a T3 and two T6s among his seven top 25s in nine career starts here. Recent form sucks which is why the price is elevated, but course form and knowledge mean something and a small backing could be a winner. He also holds the course record at La Quinta carding a 59 in 2017.
Harry Hall +4000
A strong close to 2024 has apparently carried over for Hall, who went T8-T10 on the Hawai’i Swing extending his streak of top 15 finishes to five straight. Even before that he was smacking the ball around leading to his first Tour title in July at the ISCO Championship. Going back to the beginning of July Hall has 10 top 25s in 13 starts.
Courses: Pete Dye Stadium Course; Nicklaus Tournament Course; La Quinta CC
The three course format is more out of necessity than by design. With amateurs competing along with a full field of pros, having everyone complete a round before darkness sets in requires multiple layouts. Pros and amateurs will each play the Pete Dye Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club over the first three days with the cut rule in effect after Round 3. Those surviving the cut will play the final 18 holes on the Stadium Course, which is considered the most difficult typically playing two or more strokes harder on average. It plays over 7,200 yards at par 72 with five scoreable par 4s that are less than 410 yards. There are hazards to watch out for, including heavy rough, strategically placed bunkers and water in play on nearly half the holes. The AMX is known for low scores with the winner averaging 26-under over the last six editions.
