Thanks to COVID the PGA Tour gets a nice two-week stay in Las Vegas. The second leg of the Vegas Swing takes place this week with the relocated CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. The fourth edition of this event moves from South Korea due to the pandemic and will be played at one of the most exclusive joints in the world with a no-cut field of 78 golfers. The Tour couldn’t completely avoid the coronavirus with world No. 1 and opening favorite Dustin Johnson testing positive and withdrawing. First alternate J.T. Poston takes his place. The talented yet short field of players offers up numerous matchup betting opportunities. You can find current odds at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
Another winning week on my matchup picks puts me at 10-5 since the new season started. With a limited field of great golfers things will be more difficult, but that won’t scare me away. There is little to draw on in terms of course form since many in the field are not familiar with the layout, unless they watched the Tiger vs. Phil showdown in 2018. Shadow Creek is long at 7,527 yards and par 72, but much like last week at TPC Summerlin altitude will make it play shorter. Once on the property you’re far removed from a desert course with waterfalls, creeks and rolling mounds making it more like a desert oasis. When handicapping and betting matchups remember the entire field will play 72 holes, so a bad start isn’t crippling to your bankroll.
The CJ Cup at Shadow Creek Matchup Picks
Paul Casey -115 vs. Rickie Fowler
Casey enjoyed a few extra days to hang around the Strip after he missed the cut at the Shriners. It really wasn’t his fault, though, shooting 5-under. He played through the weekend in his previous six starts that included a T2 at the PGA Championship and T17 at the U.S. Open. He doesn’t have to worry about playing through this week and his form is in much better shape than that of his matchup partner.
Tyrrell Hatton -130 vs. Brooks Koepka
Koepka makes his first start following a two-month injury layoff and I wonder how in-tune he’s going to be. It makes more sense for him to treat this as a warm up for the Masters and the rest of the season since he’s guaranteed four rounds. For that reason I have to back Hatton, with some hesitancy, though. Hatton is coming off a Euro Tour win at last week’s BMW PGA Championship and making the long trip. You can’t argue with the results, though.
Louis Oosthuizen -115 vs. Joaquin Niemann
It’s hard to go against Niemann since he’s been solid this season. However Oosthuizen has been better, topping the young Chilean at Winged Foot and at the Shriners. Maybe it’s time for the tables to turn, but Oosthuizen has been playing strong golf for two months. He topped the field with a closing 64 at the Shriners to move into the top-20. That came after solo third at the U.S. Open giving him five top-25s in his last six Tour starts. I’ll back him for another strong showing.
Rory McIlroy -110 vs. Justin Thomas
It looks like fatherhood agrees with McIlroy. In two starts since becoming a dad, Rory has a pair of T8s with the most recent at Winged Foot where he led the field in strokes gained off the tee. He was second in par-5 scoring and will be presented a number of chances at that distance this week. During down time after the U.S. Open, Rory worked on extra distance off the tee, perhaps inspired by Bryson DeChambeau. Working on one of the stronger parts of his game is a sign that he’s in a good place.
Matthew Wolff -115 vs. Patrick Cantlay
The hottest golfer on Tour since the start of the season, Wolff has been beaten by only two players in two starts. He finished behind Martin Laird at the Shriners and was a distant second to DeChambeau at the U.S. Open. More encouraging was how Wolff finished last season playing four rounds in six straight starts placing among the top-22 four times. I’ll ride that heater hopefully to another matchup win this week.
