Sticking around the Las Vegas area for another week, the PGA Tour heads a few miles up the road for the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. The tournament was relocated from its original site in South Korea over COVID concerns, but plans on returning to Jeju Island next fall. The fourth playing of this event will again feature a no-cut field of 78 golfers. Defending champion Justin Thomas, who also won the maiden tournament in 2017, looks to continue his dominance stateside. He’s joined in the field by 2018 titlist Brooks Koepka, who makes his return following a two-month injury layoff. The top four golfers in the OWGR and seven of the top 10 are scheduled to peg it up at Shadow Creek Golf Course with world No. 1 Dustin Johnson the favorite. Odds Analysis
Xander Schauffele +1203
The X-man always plays up to the competition and he excels on every course he encounters. I can’t imagine Shadow Creek scaring him away. He’s coming off a solo fifth at Winged Foot and closed last season with eight straight top-25s, including a second-place showing at the TOUR Championship. Schauffele has been as consistent as they come with the only thing missing being a title. I didn’t need any more convincing to back him, despite relatively short odds.
Matthew Wolff +2209
Golf is a streaky game and Wolff is riding a heater while being offered at a good price considering he just dominated in the desert. With the help of Saturday’s 61 he grabbed a share of second at the Shriners last week and played Winged Foot at even-par for a solo runner-up at the U.S. Open. He’s finished behind only two players the last two starts and the goal is to have no one ahead of him this week. His ball striking has been impressive, which will help on a new course. Dropping putts was also a strong part of his game during his runner-up showings.
Tony Finau +2812
I was going to back Finau last week until a positive COVID test forced him out of the Shriners. He’s played well in Vegas in the past going 6 for 6 at TPC Summerlin with two top-10s among his four top-16s. He’s a risky pick since we don’t know how he’s going to handle the first event back, but you can’t argue with his game before the diagnosis. A T8 at the U.S. Open was his fifth top-10 in his last eight starts. And like I said, he’s plays well in the desert.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +4500
The only thing that concerns me about Fitzpatrick is him making the long trip to Vegas after competing in the Euro Tour’s BMW PGA Championship in Surrey England last week. His game certainly looked good with strong iron play and accurate putting leading to a T7. The result would have been much better if not for a Saturday 76 that all but took him out of contention. It’s been hit or miss over his last six PGA Tour starts with three top-6s and three MCs. I’ll back a hit this week.
Louis Oosthuizen +4000
Carding the low round with Sunday’s 64 at the Shriners should give Oosthuizen a boost of confidence heading into the CJ Cup. Another good sign is his run of solid form over the last two months. He climbed into the top-20 at TPC Summerlin and finished alone in third at the U.S. Open giving him five top-25s in his last six starts.
Course: Shadow Creek Golf Course – 7,527 yards, Par 72
Nestled in the Nevada desert Shadow Creek doesn’t feel or look like a desert course. Creeks, waterfalls and rolling terrain transform the property into an oasis. It’s one of the most exclusive clubs catering to high rollers, and located a short distance off the Las Vegas strip it certainly gets its share. You might remember the layout from the made for TV event between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson back in 2018. Prior to a 2008 makeover Tiger held the course record at 60. At over 7,500 yards it’s long, but like last week at TPC Summerlin elevation will shorten the distance. The field will have to contend with water on half the holes and small greens throughout.
