The CJ CUP at Summit Golf Odds

Sticking around the Las Vegas area for another week, the PGA Tour heads a few miles up the road to the Summit Golf Club for The CJ CUP @ Summit. The tournament was relocated from its original site in South Korea over COVID concerns last year with Jason Kokrak taking the title at Shadow Creek. The fifth playing of this event will again feature a no-cut field of 78 golfers with several more Ryder Cup participants scheduled to peg it up. Justin Thomas won twice when the tournament was played on Jeju Island and looks to bring that championship magic with him. JT is second on the odds board behind betting favorite and last year’s runner-up Xander Schauffele. Odds Analysis

Tony Finau +2500

Finau tees it up for the first time this season after a strong close to the previous campaign. He finally broke through for a win in The Northern Trust and placed among the top-15 in the last two playoff events. He’s one of the best players tee-to-green and his distance off the tee will be a benefit on a course that has some length. Finau had success at TPC Summerlin with a pair of top-10s and given the proximity the properties are close enough to use as a measuring stick.

Tyrrell Hatton +4000

We’ll see what Hatton has when he returns to the PGA Tour this week. He shot 17-under at Shadow Creek last year with two 65s, but a third round 73 proved to be his undoing. He navigated his way around that track expertly and comes in with a week’s rest after a co-runner-up finish at the European Tour Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. It’s worth taking a look a little further down the odds board with a number of quality players in a shortened field. And Hatton has proven he can score on courses like Summit Club.

Shane Lowry +4500

It was hit or miss for Lowry at the end of last season with a pair of top-10s, a T17, and three MCs in his last seven PGA Tour starts. Overall he was more consistent during the campaign and he showed signs that consistency has returned with a good showing on the Euro Tour posting a T17 in the BMW PGA Championship followed by a T4 in the Dunhill Links. He even had a decent showing at the Ryder Cup despite the loss. I found his current price enticing and think backing the former Open champ is worth the risk.

Collin Morikawa +1400

I typically don’t go this high on the odds board when analyzing stats and players, but it’s hard to ignore Morikawa and his connection with the Summit Club. He’s a member and probably has more knowledge about the layout’s nuances than the rest of the field put together. Oh, and he shot a 62 on the course as well. That doesn’t mean a victory, but couple his recent strong play with his course knowledge and Morikawa is as close to a sure thing as you’re gonna get.

Aaron Wise +5500

Kokrak was around a 90/1 longshot to win last year’s tournament and look at what happened. Even in a limited field with tremendous players anything can happen. Wise is among a number of players who call Vegas and the surrounding area home and that level of comfort may have played a role in his top-10 showing at the Shriners. And it’ll certainly give him a leg up on the field this week. He’s been playing steady golf for a few months with four straight top-30s on his resume going back to the end of last season. A little home cooking can do wonders and the price is definitely right.

Course: Summit Golf Club – 7,431 yards, Par 72

Vegas is known for its glitz and glamour so why not include the PGA Tour. The fellas head to the exclusive Summit Club, just a short distance from last week’s host venue TPC Summerlin, but worlds apart in terms of status. Opened in 2017, the property is a stock par 72 that plays to just over 7,400 yards. There’s a good mix of long and short holes on each par setup with paralyzing views of the Strip from the elevated tee boxes. Water is in play on nearly half the holes and upwards of 60 bunkers are sprinkled around the property to add some drama. This is the first Tour event on this course so we don’t know what to expect, but in line with other Vegas venues we should see some low scores. And without a cut line, don’t worry if the golfer you’re backing isn’t at the top of the leaderboard.
