A non-signature event on the PGA Tour tends to lessen the quality of the field, which is the case this week for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. At No. 20, Jordan Spieth is the highest ranked player in the field and the betting favorite in the outright market. Defending champion Jason Day is close behind ranked No. 22. Spieth missed the tournament last year but has enjoyed success in his home state of Texas. He was runner-up at this event in 2022 and finished among the top 10 at the Texas Open in early April. Day’s victory last year ended a string of three straight wins by Korean golfers. That hasn’t affected the Koreans this year with Si Woo Kim, Sungjae Im and Byeong Hun An positioned between Spieth and Day on the early lines. Odds Analysis
Tom Kim +2650
With Korean golfers having so much success at this event in recent years it only makes sense to pick a few who might continue the trend. We haven’t heard a lot of Kim since bursting onto the scene a short while ago. He’s yet to collect a top 15 finish this season, however, playing in his adoptive home territory could be boost he needs. Kim cashed in each of his two career starts in this tournament with a personal best T17 in 2022. Also encouraging is that he’s coming off his second top 20 of the season with a T18 at the RBC Heritage a few weeks ago. So he should be well rested, too.
Kyoung Hoon Lee +6350
It’s hard to overlook what Lee did to TPC Craig Ranch when winning the title in consecutive years. He posted a record-low winning score of 25-under to win by three shots in 2021 and followed with a more impressive 26-under to best native Texan Jordan Spieth by a shot in 2022 for his only Tour wins. I was intrigued by his results here as well as his price. He also has a pair of top 10s over his last seven starts and finished T11 in New Orleans.
Adam Scott +3050
Scott was tournament champion at a different venue in 2008 and returned when Craig Ranch began hosting. He also showed his mastery of the course last year when he opened and closed with a 63 to earn a share of eighth. The veteran Aussie has been consistent this season going 6 for 7 with four top 20s. Most recently he overcame an opening 76 at Augusta to finish T22.
Jordan Spieth +1450
Spieth can roll out of bed and be on the course making this home game an important one for him. He is the betting favorite but recent struggles make his position somewhat unstable. The positive is that Spieth usually plays well in Texas and the subdued atmosphere should also help. Familiarity with the layout that yielded him a T9 in 2021 and runner-up last season is also what he needs to break out of the funk he’s in.
Will Zalatoris +2350
With his injury issues seemingly behind him, literally since it was a back issue that put him on the shelf last year, Zalatoris is ready to make up for lost time. The consistency in his game has yet to return with a little hit or miss to his results. He placed among the top 15 four times and was T34 or worse five other times. Zalatoris is another Texan looking to shine and build off his debut two years ago when he earned a share of 17th.
Course: TPC Craig Ranch – 7,414 yards, Par 71
TPC Craig Ranch debuted as a PGA Tour host in 2021 and is locked in for the next few years bringing some stability to what has been a nomadic existence for the tournament. The two lowest tournament winning scores were achieved by K.H. Lee, who won the initial playing at TPC Craig Ranch in 2021 at 25-under and was one-shot better in 2022. Last year Jason Day matched the third-lowest winning score in tournament history at 23-under, so you can see why the course is viewed positively by the players. At just over 7,400 yards at par 71, the course is long but not intimidating. There is plenty of room down the fairways and minimal rough giving mashers an edge. The greens are firm and several reachable par 4s offer a chance to make up strokes. And we’ve seen numerous eagles on the par 5s over the years.
