The battle for the most distinctive piece of clothing in sports gets underway this week when the top players in the world assemble at Augusta National for the 87th edition of The Masters. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler opened as the betting favorite in the outright market looking to become the first to retain the green jacket in two decades. The last player to go back to back at Augusta National was Tiger Woods, who also happens to be in the field but is situated further down the odds board since he’s making only his second start of the season. With 88 of the game’s best scheduled to peg it up the tournament matchup betting market is overflowing with wagering opportunities. Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are the top three favorites and they are featured in numerous matchups including against each other. Need to Know
Another change to Augusta National added additional yardage to the scorecard total making this year’s iteration the longest in the history of The Masters. The course was a beast to begin with, but with 35 more yards added to the par-5 13th the total distance is now 7,545 yards with one of the easier scoring holes modified. Still, the par-5s are scoreable with lower scores out there. Being long off the tee and having a strong approach game will aid the scoring, but it’s critical to be solid on the short grass with tricky undulating greens swallowing poor approach shots. The low 50 plus ties advance to the weekend, which should help in matchups since the field is less than 90 players deep.
The Masters Matchup Picks
Xander Schauffele -103 vs. Tony Finau
He’s probably the best player without a major championship and I’m sure Schauffele is getting tired of hearing that. He’s been a stud at Augusta with two podiums in three starts, but his MC last year is a sore spot. He’s a contender wherever he plays and the X-man has gotten over a back issue that forced him out of the TOC in January. He’s made the cut in every start since his return boasting a trio of top-10s.
Dustin Johnson -116 vs. Cameron Young
The big winner in LIV Golf last year with a bunch of money added to his back account, Johnson is also remembered for his dominant effort at the 2020 Masters when he won by five swings posting the largest margin since Tiger won by 12 strokes in 1997. Though the win came in November at Augusta, DJ’s been just as strong in the tournament’s traditional slot with seven top 15s in 12 career appearances including at T12 last year.
Jason Day -101 vs. Cameron Young
Much like Jordan Spieth did a few years ago, Day has turned back the clock looking like the guy who won seemingly every week just several seasons ago. He placed among the top 20 in all seven starts this season with five of them doubling as top 10s. His game could only be better with a win but I’ll instead back him in this matchup with a history of three top 5s at Augusta.
Max Homa -101 vs. Sung-Jae Im
His history in majors and at Augusta is spotty, but without a doubt Homa is bursting with confidence looking to contend for the first time in a marquee event. Few have been as good as Max this season with a pair of wins already this season and four top 15s, including a runner-up at the Genesis, leading in the Masters.
Brooks Koepka +111 vs. Sam Burns
When not bothered by injuries Koepka is one of the best in the game. And just a few short years ago his was tearing up the major circuit. The move to LIV Golf has seemingly restored his game with a win in Orlando last week making him the first two-time winner on that circuit. And he’s anxious to renew his relationship with Augusta after MCs the previous two seasons. Prior to that, the four-time major champion was 5 for 5 with a co-runner-up in 2019.
