The Masters Golf Matchups

The last two editions were affected by COVID, but things appear to be back to normal as we get ready for the first major of the PGA Tour season. The 86th Masters is in its familiar spot in the rotation, fans will wander the property at Augusta National Golf Club and Tiger Woods will be included among the field. It’s the smallest major championship in terms of the number of golfers, however it doesn’t lack for excitement with the best players in the world going after one of the most iconic pieces of clothing in sports. Jon Rahm lost his spot as the world’s top-ranked player but he opened as the betting favorite in the outright market and in a number of tournament matchups. BookMaker.eu offers an abundance of matchup odds featuring the top players in the sport in the biggest event on Tour when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

There have been changes to a few holes on the iconic course bringing the total yardage at Augusta to 7,510. The additional length comes at two separate holes making the track even more difficult. Now at just over 7,500 yards, Augusta National is no picnic. The par-5s are scoreable and need to be taken advantage of. Being long off the tee and having a strong approach game will aid the scoring, but it’s critical to be solid on the short grass with tricky undulating greens swallowing poor approach shots. The low 50 plus ties advance to the weekend, which should help in matchups since the field is just over 90 players deep.

The Masters Matchup Picks

Xander Schauffele -105 vs. Viktor Hovland

With Rahm getting his first major championship out of the way at last year’s U.S. Open, the title of best player not to win a major belongs to Schauffele, which kind of sucks since he’s the only golfer to win a gold medal at the last Olympics. Anyway, I still have faith in the X-man and feel that it’s just a matter of time before that maiden major title. And he’s probably come closest in the Masters with three podiums during his career, including two in the last three playings.

Will Zalatoris -115 vs. Shane Lowry

Proving last year that he’s a perfect fit for the Augusta layout, Zalatoris calmly finished alone in second at 9-under for the week. It was the best finish by a Masters rookie in nearly a decade and was part of an incredible run for the Z-man. His stats are a perfect indicator of success on this track. Zalatoris leads the Tour in strokes gained: tee to green and is among the top-10 in GIR. Keep up that work and he’s without a doubt among the final group on Sunday.

Tony Finau -115 vs. Russell Henley

Putting together his best tournament finish and best round since early January, Finau got geared up for the Masters with last week’s showing in San Antonio. It wasn’t the greatest finish for him, but it was a step in the right direction with a T29. And he closed the event with a 69. Always one that turns it up a notch in majors, Finau has been close in the big tournaments with 10 career top-10s in major championships, including three in four starts at Augusta. That’s enough to push me in his direction in this matchup.

Bubba Watson +110 vs. Max Homa

Recent results have Watson at plus odds in this matchup. But can you go wrong backing a two-time Masters winner? Well, you could since it’s been kind of hit or miss with him, but at least Augusta has been his favorite track and the Masters his most successful major. Watson has a couple of top-12s to go along with his wins and he’s missed the cut just once in 13 career starts.

Cameron Smith -105 vs. Scottie Scheffler

Two of the hottest players in the world matched in a head-to-head makes for some intriguing moments. Smith and Scheffler have combined for five Tour wins just since the start of the year and both enter playing outstanding golf. The only thing separating the two for me is the price and backing Smith looks to be a good bet. Besides, a runner-up finish in 2020 is one of his three top-10s at Augusta.
