The Masters Golf Matchups

The elegant Augusta National Golf Club has been the host of The Masters since it was first played 84 years ago and the PGA Tour invades the southern Georgia town for the first of two consecutive majors. That’s right, the COVID outbreak postponed the original playing in April moving the event to the fall for the first time. The Tour returns to Augusta National in a few months giving those who don’t slip on the green jacket another chance. Dustin Johnson returned from quarantine and didn’t miss a beat with a runner-up finish last week. The OWGR No. 1 is the second favorite behind U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau. BookMaker.eu offers an abundance of matchup odds for the biggest event on Tour when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

There are a few notable changes for this edition. First, the time of year is unlike any other with the event played for the first time during the fall with weather being more of a threat. Also, the format of having players within 10 shots of the lead after 36 holes advancing to the weekend was scrapped, which could impact some of our matchup picks. Stretched out to nearly 7,500 yards, Augusta National is no picnic. The par 5s are scoreable and need to be taken advantage of like Tiger Woods did last year in his victory. Being long off the tee and having a strong approach game will aid the scoring, but it’s critical to be solid on the short grass with tricky greens.

The Masters Matchup Picks

Bubba Watson +134 vs. Hideki Matsuyama

I was a little surprised to Watson offered at this price which is why I’m so intrigued. Sure Matsuyama is hot following a co-runner-up showing last week and four top-20s at Augusta. But Bubba has a pair of green jackets in his closet and has been nearly as good heading to Augusta with four top-20s in five starts, including a T7 at Shadow Creek and a T4 at Sherwood in his last two starts. That’s too much to overlook with favorable plus-odds.

Xander Schauffele -107 vs. Justin Thomas

Is this where Schauffele breaks through for his first major title? We won’t know that until Sunday, but the X-man is a major champion in waiting. He’s made the cut in 12 straight majors with five top-10s among his nine top-20 finishes over that span. He finished T2 last year, one-shot behind Tiger in just his second Masters start. A model of consistency, Schauffele has played the weekend in every event since the restart with a pair of runner-up showings in his last four starts. He may not win this time but it’s a good bet that he’ll be close.

Rory McIlroy -105 vs. Jon Rahm

We’ve seen glimpses of McIlroy returning to his pre-lockdown form and becoming a daddy has relieved some of the stress. Since the birth of his child he has a pair of top-10s and finished among the top-21 in all four starts. He can fully concentrate on completing the career grand slam with limited distractions. His five top-10s at Augusta have all come in the last six years so the layout certainly isn’t an issue.

Tiger Woods +158 vs. Jason Day

Seeing Eldrick at this price was too good to pass up. I faded Woods at last year’s Masters and look what happened. I won’t make the same mistake, but I’ll be cautious with the investment. A small wager on the Big Cat will yield a decent return. Recent results don’t give me much confidence, and Day is listed among the favorites, but can you afford not to back Tiger when offered at plus-odds?

Brooks Koepka -113 vs. Patrick Cantlay -117

When majors roll around, you can count on Koepka to pick up his game. Four wins in his last nine starts is proof of that. Any concerns over the knee issue that put him on the shelf a bit ago were alleviated with a nice tune up in Houston where he was second in strokes gained: putting leading to a T5. Brooks is perfect in four starts at Augusta and he was among a trio of players finishing one-shot behind Woods for a T2 last year.
