The biggest news coming out of Augusta this week is whether or not Tiger Woods will tee it up in the first major championship of the season. While he has yet to commit either way as of this writing, the Big Cat is included in the field and listed on the odds board. Woods hasn’t played an official PGA Tour event since being involved in a car accident over a year ago and if he does play how competitive will he be? The majors bring out the best golfers in the world so there won’t be a shortage of top contenders to wager on. Jon Rahm opened as the betting favorite with Justin Thomas, Cameron Smith, Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy all posted at +1609 or shorter on the opening line. Odds Analysis
Matthew Fitzpatrick +5500
Only one golfer earned his maiden PGA Tour title at the Masters, which doesn’t bode well for Fitzpatrick. But Fitz is no slouch with seven international victories under his belt, including the Andalucia Masters last October. He also closed 2021 with a runner-up in Dubai before continuing his strong run of form on the PGA side in 2022. He has four top-10s in five stroke play events this year and you could argue he’s one of the top in-form players heading to Augusta. He has yet to replicate his T7 at Augusta from 2016, but he’s a more confident player now and at his price I definitely think he’s worth the investment.
Rory McIlroy +1609
I’m betting McIlroy used last week’s start in San Antonio as a reason to stretch his legs and get a few swings in. It sure looked that way with an eye on Augusta, and for good reason. I’m not overly concerned with his MC since this week is a bigger time in his life with the career grand slam at his fingertips. Rory has had a resurgence in his game this season and he’s had success at Augusta with six top-10s in his last eight Masters starts. And there aren’t many chances left at winning the Green Jacket and his career slam.
Louis Oosthuizen +4500
If his play in major championships last season is an indication Oosthuizen should be among the leaders this week. And he needs something to get his game back in shape. He had a pair of runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and was also T3 at The Open during an incredible run. He’s cooled off a bit this season, which is why his price is where it is. Still, Oosthuizen has proven the can play with the big boys and this is a chance for him to breakthrough.
Xander Schauffele +2216
The best golfer to never win a major might just be Schauffele, who has come close a number of times but still awaits the career-defining victory. Throughout his career Schauffele has thrived in majors with six top-5s among his nine top-10s, and he’s been good at Augusta with two podium finishes in his last three starts. Jon Rahm broke the seal on his drought in majors last year and I’m betting on the X-man to do the same this week.
Tiger Woods +8000
This qualifies as an extreme longshot, and we don’t even know if Woods is going to peg it up at Augusta. All signs point to him playing, though, and you know Tiger isn’t going to half-ass his way through a major. And we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of his first Masters title this year making the symmetry almost too much to ignore.
Course: Augusta National Golf Club – 7,510 yards, Par 72
Augusta National Golf Club underwent a few changes ahead of this year’s Masters. Two holes were lengthened adding an additional 35 yards putting the layout at 7,510 yards. The course is even more beastly now. The par-5 holes provide some relief and they’ve been among the easiest on Tour when it comes to the percentage of eagles scored. They aren’t easy, but they are reachable in two for the big hitters and they must be taken advantage of to be in contention. Distance off the tee is nice, but most consider Augusta a second shot track with undulating greens destroying poor iron shots. More than half the field will make it to the weekend with the low 50 plus ties advancing, though being within 10 shots of the lead no longer applies.
