the Memorial Tournament Golf Matchups

With its status upgraded to a designated event, an even stronger field will assemble at the house that Jack built for this week’s Memorial Tournament. A stop on the PGA Tour since 1976, Jack Nicklaus was the inspiration behind the design of Muirfield Village Golf Club, though the course underwent a massive remodel following Jon Rahm’s victory in 2020. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is set to make an appearance after skipping out on last year’s edition, which was won by Billy Horschel. Each of the top five players in the OWGR are scheduled to peg it up with No. 2 Rahm, No. 3 Rory McIlroy, No. 4 Patrick Cantlay and No. 5 Xander Schauffele joining Scheffler in the top tier of favorites for the outright. Cantlay looks to continue a trend of winning every other year following his 2019 and 2021 titles. An impressive field of players leaves us with a number of intriguing matchups. Need to Know

As mentioned Muirfield Village had a major facelift in 2020 adding length and trees with reconfigured bunkers and greens. That didn’t seem to affect the field too much with the two previous winners each carding 13-under. The course plays over 7,500 yards with fairway relief for big hitters. However, thick rough puts an emphasis on hitting fairways and making putts is always a determining factor. That was much easier for the limited field last year and tame conditions should help this week. This is one of the longest single-venue tournaments on the PGA Tour with most of the top players having visited Muirfield Village several times. And it’s been a hit or miss over the last 11 years with five tournaments needing extra holes and the other six having a multiple shot winner. The course isn’t difficult but will require every stick in the bag.

Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks

Patrick Cantlay +100 vs. Jon Rahm

It’s hard to go against Rahm even if he is slumping a bit because you know he’ll break out at anytime. But here I am backing Cantlay in a matchup of golfers that had a major impact in the 2021 edition. Cantlay was the eventual winner in a playoff only after Rahm had to withdraw due to a positive COVID test while holding a six-shot lead entering the final round. Cantlay was the biggest benefactor winning in a playoff for his second title and fifth top 10 in seven starts at Muirfield Village.

Jason Day +100 vs. Collin Morikawa

I’m always looking for some kind of edge a player may have over the field and Day has a big one, though it hasn’t benefitted him much in the past. A member of Muirfield Village, Day has probably played the course more than Nicklaus, which in theory you’d think is beneficial. That hasn’t always been the case with a mixed bag of results here. But, with Day back in the winner’s circle a few weeks ago and with a number of tantalizing finishes so far this season, It’s hard not to back Day given the recent run of form he’s enjoyed.

Rickie Fowler -125 vs. Cameron Young

I’m jumping on the Fowler bandwagon again after a top-10 at the Schwab showed me his head’s in the game. A recent stretch of eight top 20s in nine starts ended with a MC at the PGA Championship. That would’ve destroyed Fowler just last year, but he responded with a flurry. And Fowler is no stranger to central Ohio. Over his career Fowler has a pair of runner-up showings and he’s never missed an edition since his 2010 rookie campaign.

Sahith Theegala +105 vs.Tom Kim

Kim has slowed down a bit since earlier in the season with Theegala sneaking up. And the progress of the former Pepperdine Wave hasn’t gone unnoticed which is why backing him at plus odds is a steal. He has a remarkable streak of 17 straight payouts with a game suited for Muirfield. He showed that off in two visits with a top 5 last year. He has all the tools and will be a first time winner soon, but I’ll take a victory in this matchup.

Adam Scott +108 vs. Keegan Bradley

Few have been as consistent as Scott, who hasn’t missed a cut since last year’s Memorial. He strung together a pair of top 10s ahead of his T29 at the PGA Championship, his best stretch of the season. Scott has a history at Muirfield Village going 13 of 14 with four top 10s among his six top 25s. Another plus odds player with a solid background has plenty of value.
