The seventh Signature Event of the PGA Tour season takes place at the house that Jack built with the invited field assembling in Ohio for the Memorial Tournament. A stop on the PGA Tour since 1976, Jack Nicklaus was the inspiration behind the design of Muirfield Village Golf Club, which has hosted every event. Viktor Hovland is back to defend the title he won in a playoff last year. He was also the only golfer to break par in all four rounds with the remodeled layout proving to be a challenge. The world’s best will take center stage with nine of the top 10 ranked players set to peg it up, including No. 1 and outright betting favorite Scottie Scheffler. Fresh off his first major championship, Xander Schauffele is positioned as the second favorite. An impressive field leaves us with a number of intriguing matchups. Need to Know
It’s hard to say if last year was an aberration or if Muirfield Village matured into a more challenging venue following its massive remodel a few years ago. Viktor Hovland won in a playoff finishing 72 holes at 7-under, the worst winning score in over four decades. It was also the sixth time in the last 10 years extra holes were required to determine a champion. The course stretches to 7,569 yards at par 72 with fairway relief for big hitters. However, thick rough puts an emphasis on hitting fairways and making putts is always a determining factor. The recent modification took place at the 16th hole, which was the most difficult par 3 on Tour last season. Relief there should help scores get more in line with what we’ve seen previously. It’s not an overly difficult test, but every stick in the bag is required.
the Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks
Rory McIlroy +112 vs. Xander Schauffele
I hate betting against Schauffele and normally wouldn’t do it, but considering he’s still enjoying the ride from his first major championship his focus could be altered. And it’s not like he’s matched against a slouch with McIlroy on a nice run of form and having a strong history in this event. McIlroy followed back-to-back wins with a T12 at the PGA Championship and most recently a T4 in Canada. He’s also recorded eight top 20s in this tournament.
Patrick Cantlay -110 vs. Justin Thomas
Another player with a strong history at Muirfield, Cantlay has done what McIlroy has failed to do – win the trophy. In fact, Cantlay did it twice within a three-year span and is the second highest money winner behind Tiger Woods at the Memorial. Cantlay is 7 for 7 with a fourth and T3 among his other finishes making Muirfield his own happy place.
Sahith Theegala -127 vs. Max Homa
Backing Theegala on numerous occasions this season has been a fruitful endeavor. And considering his all-around talent, Muirfield Village is a course that the former Pepperdine standout can master. He claimed a T5 here in 2022 despite carding a second round 75 and I think it’s safe to say he’s improved since then. He missed the cut in Canada, but Theegala finished T12 at Valhalla and has five top 10s on his resume this season. I expect him to bounce back in a major way this week.
Byeong Hun An +108 vs. Sungjae Im
Flying quietly under the radar, An moved into the top 10 in the FedExCup standings with consistent play much of the season. He has four top 4 finishes among his eight top 25s this season and I’m sure he’s reminded of his playoff loss at Muirfield in 2018 when finished at 15-under. That’s his best finish among five top 25s on this layout and he appears to be a solid pick at his price.
Viktor Hovland +122 vs. Collin Morikawa
From a pure value standpoint backing Hovland in this matchup makes a lot of sense. Morikawa is on a serious roll right now, but Hovland enters as the defending champ and has heated up recently. Hovland ended a difficult three start stretch that included a MC at the Masters by finishing T24 at the Wells Fargo Championship and backed that up with a solo third at the PGA Championship closing with three rounds of 66.
