the Memorial Tournament PGA Odds

The PGA Tour heads to Jack’s Place in central Ohio this week for the Memorial Tournament. A strong field is assembled for the seventh Signature Event with nine of the world’s top 10 ready to peg it up at the Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club in the Columbus suburbs. World No. 2 Xander Schauffele plays for the first time as a major champion after his triumph at the PGA Championship. With seven straight top 10s that includes four wins, Scottie Scheffler opened as the prohibitive betting favorite on the opening line. Rory McIlroy is positioned as the third favorite with the trio boasting shorter than 10/1 odds. The only golfer to break par in all four rounds last year, Viktor Hovland emerged with his fourth career PGA Tour victory edging Denny McCarthy in a playoff. Odds Analysis

Ludvig Aberg +2750

Patience is a virtue on this course and Aberg has displayed plenty in his brief career. He debuts in the Memorial, but being a first-timer at any event hasn’t fazed him after a blistering run that included five top 10s among eight straight top 25s, Aberg didn’t play a full tournament since last summer when he missed the cut at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago. During that stretch he has a pair of wins and has been so strong that I’m banking on his MC being a glitch in the matrix.

Patrick Cantlay +3050

It’s hard not to back Cantlay in this tournament since he’s been so darn good over the years. He made the cut in each of his previous seven starts winning in 2019 and 2021 with two additional top 5s on his resume. He finished outside the top 20 in each of his last three starts, which played a role in his price going up. Still, he’s been good enough to collect six top 25s this season, most recently a T3 at the RBC Heritage in April.

Wyndham Clark +6050

Every so often the stars align and jumping at the chance can result in a big payday. A few months ago Clark was a hot ticket on Tour winning at Pebble Beach with a pair of runner-up finishes in a five-start stretch. He’s cooled off since then and is coming off a MC at the PGA Championship. Still, it’s hard to imagine Clark becoming a terrible golfer in a matter of weeks. Last year Clark was in contention displaying the complete game required to win at Muirfield.

Collin Morikawa +1350

In the midst of a current hot streak, Morikawa heads to Muirfield with a score to settle. He was 2-shots off the lead last year before retiring due to back spasms and I’m sure he’s looking to avenge that mishap. He’s bookended a stretch of six straight top 25s by finishing T3 at the Masters and most recently solo fourth at the Schwab. All five starts on his own ball have resulted in finishes among the top 16 so strike while the iron is hot.

Sahith Theegala +5050

As long as Theegala is playing his own ball in the contiguous United States he’s a threat, and that’s good news ahead of the Memorial. He missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week, his third MC this season. The others were at The Sentry in Hawai’i and the team-based Zurich Classic. He’s had a solid season finishing among the top 20 seven times with five of those in the top 10. Two years ago Theegala earned a T5 at Muirfield and his price is inviting.

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club – 7,569 yards, Par 72

Opened in 1974, Muirfield Village started hosting the PGA Tour two years later. Following the conclusion of the 2020 Memorial Tournament the course underwent a significant renovation and it has matured into perhaps the most challenging venue on Tour. At 7-under last year, Hovland posted the worst winning score since Hale Irwin had the same number in the 1981 iteration. It’s still a straightforward par 72 layout, though, with a number of generous fairways that are open to big hitters. Greenside bunkers serve as a line of defense and can cause problems with the save rate consistently below Tour average. Most golfers agree that Muirfield is a second-shot layout that yields favorable scores with excellent ball striking and proper positioning off the tee.
