The race to the FedExCup championship gets underway on Thursday with the first of three playoff tournaments. The top 125 players in the standings will tee it up at The Northern Trust with the top 70 after Sunday advancing to next week’s BMW Championship. This is the only tournament of the three with a cut line so guys on the fringe can’t afford to leave valuable points on the course. The tournament rotates venues with Liberty National Golf Club hosting this year. Patrick Reed was a one-shot winner two years ago on this layout. Dustin Johnson is the defending champ after obliterating the field last year at TPC Boston. Both players are ready to give it a go and sit behind betting favorite Jon Rahm on the odds board. There are plenty of intriguing matchups on the board so be sure to visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of tournament matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
Built on an old landfill, among other things, Liberty National Golf Club is hosting its fourth PGA Tour event since opening in 2006. The third event was this tournament two years ago, won by Patrick Reed. The course received negative reviews from players following the 2009 Barclays and underwent a major renovation. Things went smoothly in 2013 and the hope is to have the course a regular part of the rotation at some point. A par-71 that plays just over 7,400 yards, the course has water hazards on more than half the holes with a bunch of strategically placed bunkers. The views can be distracting, too, with the downtown New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty visible from nearly everywhere. Reed won his second Northern Trust on this lot two years ago shooting 16-under, the best score of any previous winner on this course.
The Northern Trust Matchup Picks
Jordan Spieth +140 vs. Jon Rahm
Is it wise to bet against the favorite? Considering Rahm hasn’t played since The Open while dealing with COVID, it’s hard to gauge his readiness. Spieth has taken some time off as well, but that was his choice to get ready for a playoff push. At his price it’s hard not to drop a few bucks on Spieth, who has regained his form to rank No. 2 in FedExCup points. His strong form over the last few months and a T6 here in 2019 gives me confidence. And a big pay day doesn’t hurt.
Brooks Koepka +100 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
Both players have been a little up and down this season making this an interesting pairing. DeChambeau regained his touch with a T8 at TPC Southwind, though it could have and should have been better. Koepka has been a bit more consistent with six top-6s in 2021 and the tournament has a major feel to it, which always seems to bring the best out of Brooks.
Abraham Ancer +115 vs. Patrick Cantlay
Ancer is another plus odds player who I like. Coming off his maiden Tour victory in the WGC St. Jude a few weeks back, he’s riding strong form into an event he toyed with first place two years ago. Ancer finished as runner-up to Reed in 2019 and his current run includes four top-5s among his seven top-10s in his last nine starts. Recent form, course form and plus odds, give me Ancer.
Rory McIlroy +106 vs. Xander Schauffele
This matchup price is another indication of how loaded the field is. Well, you have to be good to reach the playoff anyway, but having McIlroy as a plus odds dog is unreal. It hasn’t been the best season for McIlroy, but he does have a win and followed up his strong Olympic effort with a T12 at the WGC St. Jude. He is paired against the Olympic gold medalist, but I expect McIlroy will up his game at playoff time. And there is room to do that.
Dustin Johnson +106 vs. Collin Morikawa
It’s not the same venue, but Johnson is the defending champ after carving up TPC Boston last year to win by 11 swings. Yes, he won by 11 shots! And DJ does have a history at this joint going 4-0-1 in the 2017 Presidents Cup and leading at the midway point in 2019. He also appears to have his game in order after a recent slump had folks asking ‘what’s wrong with DJ?’
