The Northern Trust Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The top 100 in the FedExCup standings after this event will advance to next week’s Dell Technologies Championship. This will be the fourth time Ridgewood Country Club will host the event. The course is lined with trees and it does have a lot of bunkers and thick rough. Driving distance is not a big factor on this course, but scrambling is.
Jason Day -115 vs. Tiger Woods
I give Day a good chance to be in contention for the win this week. He finished tied for 5th in 2010 and the tied for 2nd in 2014. Tiger is playing better, but Day is simply the superior golfer at this point in their careers. Day has a scoring average of 68.375 in his last eight rounds on this course.
Francesco Molinari -120 vs. Jordan Spieth
This Ridgewood course should suit Molinari perfectly. He hits the ball straight, stays out of trouble and putts well. As I have said all season, Spieth simply isn’t the player he once was, as he has lost confidence. I will take Molinari in this matchup.
Kevin Streelman -120 vs. Kevin Chappell
I mentioned Streelman this week as a longshot in my odds preview. He considers this one of his home courses and he has played well in the past here. I will take him in this matchup against Chappell.
Kyle Stanley -120 vs. Billy Horschel
Stanley has done well in the past on similar courses to Ridgewood and usually is in the mix for a top 10 finish. I will lay the small number and take Stanley in this matchup.
Xander Schauffele +105 vs. Louis Oosthuizen
This matchup is all about Schaueffele, as he needs to do well in the FedExCup Playoffs to get a spot on the Ryder Cup team. Many people believe he is in the bubble, so this is a huge tournament for Xander. Ridgewood should suit him well and we get him at plus money in this matchup.
