Known by many as the PGA Tour’s fifth major, THE PLAYERS Championship is one of the biggest events on the schedule. The tournament always draws the world’s top players thanks to its enormous prize pool with the winner taking home $4.5 million, an increase of nearly $1 million from last year. And speaking of last year Cameron Smith is not returning to defend his title, but 43 of the top-50 players on the OWGR are slated to tee it up on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The world’s top three players are tightly packed at the top of the outright odds board and they’re all featured in matchups against each other. A marquee event with a star-studded field always brings out an increased betting market with several other tournament matchup options to choose from. Need to Know
TPC Sawgrass has hosted every year since 1982 so there aren’t a lot of surprises. With the exception of the iconic island green on No. 17, it’s a stock track that stretches to 7,275 yards at par 72. Moving the event to March from May a few years ago brought out more drivers and the field seemed to have an easier time. But by no means is this an easy course. Water hazards surround all but one hole and strategically-placed bunkers throughout the property have big numbers hiding around every corner. And don’t forget about the rough, which is up to 3½ inches. Sawgrass can even the playing field making course management important. And it is Florida where wind always seems to be a factor.
THE PLAYERS Championship Matchup Picks
Jason Day -110 vs. Will Zalatoris
Backing Day in a matchup last week was a shrewd move so why not go back to one of the hottest players. Four straight top-10s along with a win and two additional top-10s at TPC Sawgrass are good enough reasons. A good chunk of Day’s success is avoiding plus numbers ranking third in bogey avoidance this season. And this course has a way of biting players in the backside after a brief letdown. With his game in a good place I like Day to come through for me again.
Justin Thomas +120 vs. Patrick Cantlay
I considered Cantlay for mention in the outright, but after seeing his recent history at Sawgrass I changed my tune. And seeing Thomas at this price in a head to head was too difficult to let go. So, here I am backing JT, but for good reason. Okay, Cantlay’s failures here were a big reason, but with a win here in 2021 and a return to the solid form we’re used to seeing, Thomas can do this on his own.
Max Homa -125 vs. Tony Finau
Homa earned recognition with his outstanding play and backing him in this matchup is easier given Finau’s struggles at Sawgrass. Like Cantlay, Finau is another great player who just hasn’t been able to put it all together on this track. Homa is a two-time winner this season with four titles since the 2021-22 campaign, and he hasn’t slowed down. He’s 8 for 8 with half those starts getting him on the podium and only once has he finished outside the top-25. He closed with a 66 to get a T13 at last year’s edition showing he can navigate the track.
Jordan Spieth +125 vs. Viktor Hovland
I’m still cheering Spieth for his incredible run at the Presidents Cup. Those cheers got louder after last Week’s T4, his second strong start in the last three. Spieth was also T6 in Phoenix showing the buttery swing that always seems to put him in contention. This joint hasn’t been bad to him, but he has more MCs than paydays and hasn’t come close to the top-5 finish he had in 2014. Still, I have faith in Spieth and at plus odds I’ll happily back him in this matchup.
Harris English -105 vs. Kurt Kitayama
It took longer than I thought, but here’s to English finally finding his groove after undergoing hip surgery last year. English was a shot behind Kitayama at last week’s API and after picking up his first Tour victory I’m not sure if Kitayama is ready to end the party. He slumped earlier this year but English responded with a T12-T2. Hopefully that carries over since he has six straight MCs at TPC Sawgrass.
