Need to Know
TPC Sawgrass has hosted every year since 1982 so there won’t be any surprises for the field. With the exception of the iconic island green on No. 17, it’s a stock track that stretches to 7,275 yards at par 72. Moving the event to March from May a few years ago brought out more drivers and the field seemed to have an easier time, but by no means is this an easy course. Water hazards surround all but one hole and strategically-placed bunkers throughout the property have a tendency to inflate numbers. And don’t forget about the rough, which is up to four inches. Sawgrass can even the playing field making course management important. And it is Florida where wind always seems to be a factor. Experience on the course matters since only two players won in their tournament debut, the last in 2002.
THE PLAYERS Championship Matchup Picks
Christiaan Bezuidenhout -110 vs. Keith Mitchell
A successful stint on the DP World Tour gave Bezuidenhout the opportunity to perform on the PGA side. He’s been steady this season opening with a runner-up showing at the AMX and placing among the top 30 in three other events. The South African also has a history at Sawgrass with two paydays in as many completed starts. You might recall the 2020 edition was cancelled. Bezuidenhout was cruising last year until a closing 74 dropped him into a tie for 13th. He made the cut in 2021 earning a share of 41st.
Xander Schauffele -129 vs. Patrick Cantlay
I thought about backing Cantlay at plus odds but Schauffele’s play this season changed my mind. The X-man has four top 10s among his five top 25s in six starts this season earning a payday each time. He also broke through with a top 20 here last year after three straight MCs. And I can’t overlook his runner-up in this event in his 2018 debut. And Schauffele has been super consistent cashing in 40 consecutive starts.
Sahith Theegala +106 vs. Tony Finau
I don’t bet against Finau often, but catching Theegala at plus-odds is a bet I can’t overlook. He’s showing off good form coming in with three top 20s and a T37 in his last four starts. He also has a solo fifth at Phoenix and a T6 last week to go along with a runner-up at The Sentry giving him a trio of top 10s. Theegala’s been a threat since winning the Fortinet Championship last fall.
Wyndham Clark +120 vs. Shane Lowry
Lowry has been hot on the Florida Swing and has a history at Sawgrass, which is why he’s a big favorite. Clark has been pretty good, too, so far this season and backing a hot player at this price is a smart move. Clark won the abbreviated Pebble Beach Pro Am and was runner-up at the API last week making the move to back him a lot easier. Clark has been consistent on layouts that resemble Sawgrass using his strong iron play and money putting to rise to No. 5 in the OWGR.
Harris English -115 vs. Adam Scott
English has been sneaky good this season going 7 for 7 with a couple of top 10s among his five top 25s. I’m hoping last week’s final round crumble doesn’t affect English since he was in contention until dropping a 77 on Sunday. That score was unexpected since all but two of his 27 rounds were at or below par. Sawgrass hasn’t been good to him over the years, but I have a feeling this time is going to be different.
