THE PLAYERS Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. TPC Sawgrass normally is a course where scrambling is a key stat to consider. Si Woo Kim led the field in scrambling last year in this event. Experience is also vital at TPC Sawgrass, as only three of the previous 44 winners of this event won it in their debut. And only two of those three winners won at Sawgrass, as Jack Nicklaus won at Atlanta Country Club in 1974.
Rory McIlroy -120 vs. Dustin Johnson
Rory has three top 10 finishes in this tournament and a scoring average of 70.55. Johnson has never done anything at TPC Sawgrass in his career, with just one top 25 appearance in nine years. Rory is also in better form right now that DJ. I will lay the small price and take McIlroy in this matchup.
Jason Day -115 vs. Jordan Spieth
Day is coming off a win and he is a former winner of this event, having won two years ago. He leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting and that is why he is winning and Spieth is not. I will take Day in this matchup.
Henrik Stenson -110 vs. Jon Rahm
Stenson won this event in 2009 and he is the all-time leader in earnings in this event. He has finished in the top six in his last three tournaments and he leads the PGA Tour in fairways hit and in GIR. This course should frustrate Rahm, so I will take Stenson in this matchup.
Xander Schauffele -145 vs. J.B. Holmes
I can’t see Holmes doing well on a course like this and Schauffele continues to be underrated. I will lay the price and take Schauffele in this matchup.
Chesson Hadley -115 vs. Russell Henley
Hadley has five straight top 20 finishes and he is 35th on the PGA Tour in GIR. It has been a while since Henley had even been in contention. I will take Hadley in this matchup.
