The PGA Tour concludes the fall portion of the season schedule with the field headed to majestic St. Simons Island in Georgia for The RSM Classic. Valuable FedExCup points are up for grabs before most players hibernate over the Holiday break. Those familiar with the tournament will again see the unique two-course format, which has been around since 2015 with the field of up to 156 golfers playing the first two rounds on the Seaside and Plantation courses at Sea Island Resort. Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the more familiar Seaside layout. With top-5s in his last two starts and a course record in the Houston Open, Scottie Scheffler opened as the betting favorite and is featured in several tournament matchups. Need to Know
The biggest item of note is the two course format. Each player gets 18 holes on what is considered the easier 7,058-yard, par-72 Plantation course over the first two days with a chance to make up ground or create some separation. This course got a facelift a few years ago, though it didn’t affect the scores. Those making the cut will play the final 54 holes on the coastal Seaside layout, which measures 7,005 yards and plays at par 70. It’s a short track with few hazards so hitting fairways and greens are more important than distance. Robert Streb became the first two-time winner of this event besting Kevin Kisner in a playoff. The two completed 72 holes at 19-under, the exact same score as the previous two titlists who also won in extra holes.
The RSM Classic Matchup Picks
Henrik Norlander -115 vs. Zach Johnson
I’ve backed Norlander in the past with some success and he looks like a good play in this matchup. The Swede missed last year’s tournament due to a bout with COVID and he’s probably looking forward to playing an event that’s yielded him some good fortune. He fell in a playoff in 2016 and was consistently good across all four rounds last year for a top-5. He’s made the cut here in his last four starts and is 5 for 5 this season with a T4 in the Sanderson Farms and a top-20 in the ZOZO. There are few plus-odds players in the matchups so I have to find value elsewhere, and this is a supreme value pick.
Webb Simpson +100 vs. Scottie Scheffler
Simpson is listed as the second favorite behind his matchup partner so it isn’t a stretch to back him. And considering his resume in this tournament an even-money bet is inviting. A WD in 2018 was the only time Simpson didn’t play four rounds in this tournament and he’s stepped on the podium three times with a pair of runner-up finishes. The only thing he hasn’t done is win. It’s been a month since his T14 in the CJ CUP, so Simpson should be well-rested for this matchup.
Harris English +100 vs. Corey Conners
We haven’t seen English since exiting the Summit Club with a sore back last month. That kind of injury can play with a golfer and force all kinds of bad things to happen. I’m counting on him being at full strength and you know he nursed himself back to health with a chance to play in his backyard. English calls the area home and has played Sea Island Resort a bunch giving him an edge in this matchup. You still have to strike the ball and make shots, something Harris did last year en route to a T6.
Kevin Kisner +105 vs. Adam Scott
Though Kisner has struggled since winning the Wyndham Championship in August it’s hard to overlook his accomplishments at Sea Island. The tournament’s leading money winner, Kisner won here in 2015 by a record six swings and finished as runner-up in last year’s edition falling in a playoff. Overall he has five top-10s with all of them coming in the last seven playings. I had to jump on the price hoping Kisner has continued success on a track he obviously enjoys.
Louis Oosthuizen -115 vs. Cameron Smith
Oosthuizen has a bone to pick with Sea Island. Twelve months ago he pegged it up in this tournament and shot an opening 73 on the Plantation course and missed the cut. Given what he did in between then and now it’s hard to imagine. The South African hasn’t missed a cut since and it’s his only MC in some 19 months. His showing in last season’s majors was epic, and though he didn’t win he vaulted into the elite level. I think he can handle what’s ahead.
