The start of a new year means the beginning of a new PGA Tour season with the field headed to a familiar venue. For the 27th consecutive year the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Hawai’i on the island of Maui hosts The Sentry. Also known as the Tournament of Champions, 31 PGA Tour winners and another 29 golfers who finished inside the top 50 in the 2024 FedExCup standings are scheduled to peg it up. One notable absence is Scottie Scheffler allowing two-time major champion Xander Schauffele to emerge as the betting favorite. One of Schauffele’s nine career Tour wins was on this course in 2019 and he followed with four top 12s in as many starts since, which is why the X-man is the only golfer with shorter than 10/1 odds. Chris Kirk is looking to become the first repeat champion at this event in 15 years after besting the field by one swing last year. Odds Analysis
Patrick Cantlay +2050
The obvious choice is backing Schauffele considering his lengthy run of consistent success. However, another player who has solved Kapalua is Cantlay with two top 5s and nothing worse than a T16 in six career starts. The 2021 FedExCup winner had a quiet close to 2024, but that’s relative since he set the bar so high. He closed last year with six straight top 25s and knocked off some rust with a T11 at the Hero World Challenge in early December. He’s a threat and has some value at his price.
Wyndham Clark +3850
After a blistering 2023 that saw Clark finish among the top 6 in six starts with a pair of wins, he wasn’t as strong in 2024. However an eight-start stretch early in the season showed just how good he can be. Clark earned a podium in four of those starts winning the Pebble Beach Pro Am with two runners-up and a T3. He finished the regular season with five top 15s in six starts taking eighth at the TOUR Championship.
Collin Morikawa +1250
It would be hard to find a player as consistent as Morikawa who didn’t win a title in 2024. A run of seven top 5s last season started with a T5 at Kapalua continuing his mastery of the layout. In his last three starts in this event Morikawa has finished T5 or better with a runner-up in 2023 when he finished 2-shots back of Jon Rahm. And he wasn’t bad in his two earlier starts going T7 in 2020 and 2021.
J.T. Poston +4050
Following a dreadful July and August Poston regained his composure closing the season with a win at the Shriners and a T5 at the RSM Classic. He closed the year the same way he opened when he finished 4-shots off the pace for a T5 at last year’s Sentry, so there has to be a level confidence knowing his game is in a good spot heading to a venue he’s performed well at.
Sahith Theegala +3050
I backed Theegala a number of times in matchups last season with plenty of success. One of his five top 5s in 2024 was at this event in his second career start at Kapalua. Theegala parlayed that into a nice season finishing among the top 10 an additional five times while ranking third in the FedExCup standings. The former Pepperdine standout is as likely as anyone to rattle off a string of wins in 2024.
Course: Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort – 7,596 yards, par 73
The course has hosted this event since 1999 but underwent a major renovation ahead of the 2019 edition. Still, there weren’t many surprises for the field, though the redesigned course saw Justin Thomas produce the worst winning 72-hole score since 2006. The additional length is negated by elevation and by playing at par 73, and the layout is known more for its tricky lies with one hole going uphill and the next downhill. Golfers also have to contend with coastal winds, which are almost always a factor. In mild conditions the layout offers little resistance. A whopping 16 players closed with a 65 or better last year with Justin Rose matching the 18-hole record with a 61. Kirk’s 29-under was the fourth-lowest winning score at Kapalua. For the most part the fairways are generous and the big sticks will get plenty of work.
