The top-30 golfers in the FedExCup standings assemble in Atlanta this week for the PGA Tour season-ending TOUR Championship and the $18 million first-place prize that comes with it. And for the fourth straight year the tournament is using the staggered-start format. With the help of his brilliant season that included four wins, Scottie Scheffler amassed the most points giving him a head start over the field. Scheffler opens at 10-under with a 2-shot lead over second-place Patrick Cantlay, who looks to become the first back to back FedExCup champion. The top-30 golfers colliding at historic East Lake Golf Club also offer up some interesting matchups with the numbers having a different look taking into account the starting strokes. Need to Know
The staggered start is designed to give those who performed better over the course of the season an advantage. A four-time winner this season, Scheffler opens with a 2-shot lead over Cantlay with Xander Schauffele four back and Sam Burns five shots off the pace. Will Zalatoris was third but withdrew. The bottom five start at even-par, 10-shots off the lead. The matchup odds factor in the handicap, which is why some of the numbers look different. It’s not a guarantee that the top players succeed, though. Opening 5-shots back in 2019, Rory McIlroy overcame the field and the scorecard to win the FedExCup. However, the No. 1 player in field won the last two years. Playing just over 7,300 yards at par 70, East Lake has some of the narrowest fairways on Tour making accuracy an important stat. Winning scores prior to the handicap being involved ranged from -7 to -13 making it difficult for those further down the starting block to make up shots.
TOUR Championship Matchup Picks
Jon Rahm +111 vs. Rory McIlroy
With the shot difference factored into the matchup odds it’s almost not worth backing the favorites. As a result most of the matchups in this section are between golfers close on the starting block. Rahm starts 1-shot behind, which could actually be several considering his matchup partner. But Rahm has heated up in the playoffs with a T5-T8 run giving him five top-10s in his last 10 starts. Furthermore he compiled the lowest aggregate score last year nearly overtaking Cantlay before falling by a swing. I’ll back the Spaniard with a healthy return.
Sahith Theegala +137 vs. K.H. Lee
Sinking a birdie putt on the final hole last week got Theegala to East Lake and he’s one of a handful of players with top-15s in the two playoff tournaments. He’s on a nice run and could tighten the race for Rookie of the Year with another strong showing. Both golfers start at even-par so neither has an advantage, but Theegala’s recent stretch is impressive and I doubt he’s feeling pressure making him a dangerous player.
Adam Scott +104 vs. Aaron Wise
On the heels of two top-5s Scott returns to East Lake for the first time since 2019 with some crazy momentum in his pocket. He’s gained nearly 15 strokes combined in the two playoff tournaments, which is the best among golfers who completed both events. He’s also a past winner on this course with high marks in GIR and strokes gained: putting. I’m always looking for value and at his price Scott offers plenty in this matchup.
Tony Finau -152 vs. Cameron Smith
Finau overcame a sluggish first half of the season to finish on a heater with back to back wins at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic followed by a T5 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He slipped a bit last week, but rebounding with three straight rounds of 68 or lower following an opening 77 was a confidence boost. Like Zalatoris, Smith skipped the BMW due to injury and I’m always wary of players in a situation like this. Starting even on the scorecard I’m backing Finau.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +116 vs. Sungjae Im
Fitzpatrick doesn’t often string bad outings together and I’m banking on him rebounding after his T48 at Wilmington CC, which was his worst finish in six starts. It’s been a strong season for him with 10 top-10s among his 13 top-25s in 19 starts. Following his three MCs this season, Fitz responded with a trio of top-10s showing his ability to quickly forget. He starts one-shot behind Im in this matchup which is why the price is where it is, but I like his chances.
