Travelers Championship PGA Matchup Odds

Following a thrilling conclusion to the season’s third major, the PGA Tour heads to the Connecticut suburb of Cromwell for the Travelers Championship. The final Signature Event of the year ensures that the PGA Tour’s best will make up the limited field, no-cut event. However, the No. 2 ranked player in the world will not be in attendance with Rory McIlroy announcing his WD following a disappointing close at the U.S. Open. In what has been a rarity this season Scottie Scheffler finished well off the pace at Pinehurst yet he’s still the overwhelming favorite in the outright market. In all, seven of the top 10 players in the world are set to peg it up just outside Hartford at TPC Highlands Ranch including defending champ Keegan Bradley, who set a scoring record to topple the field by three swings last year. Need to Know

TPC River Highlands is a tidy course that measures 6,835 yards at par 70. It’s one of the shortest courses on Tour and got even smaller with a reconfigured ninth hole chopping off upwards of 15 yards off the total. The course has hosted this event since 1984 and has undergone a few makeovers since then. There are just two par-5s and both offer a chance to make up ground. Those holes typically play well under par. We’ve seen different styles succeed on this layout but it will take every stick in the bag to emerge victorious. Overall the course isn’t difficult with low numbers popping up all over the place and that’s unlikely to change. Bradley set a tournament scoring record last year at 257, only the third total below 260 in the tournaments more than 70-year history. The Tour’s only 58 was recorded on this track in 2016 by Jim Furyk.

Travelers Championship Matchup Picks

Tony Finau -104 vs. Russell Henley -126

Despite the short length of River Highlands big hitters have enjoyed success in the past. Finau ranks up there in terms of distance and has seemingly solved the layout in recent years with a T13 in 2022 after three straight MCs. And Finau enters on a run of solid form following a T3 last week when he was tied for the lead on Sunday. He’s progressively finished better in his last four starts with each resulting in a top 20.

Xander Schauffele +135 vs. Scottie Scheffler

If not for Scheffler’s dominance this season we’d be talking more about Schauffele, who ranks just behind the No. 1 player in the world in most statistical categories. The X-man has been marvelous all season recording 11 top 10s in 15 starts, including four in a row. He followed his runner-up at the Wells Fargo by winning the PGA Championship for his first major title. And he continued his hot run with a T8 at the Memorial and T7 at the U.S. Open. You could argue that over the last month Schauffele has been better than Scheffler and he’ll prove it this week.

Sahith Theegala +127 vs. Tommy Fleetwood

The price for Theegala in this matchup caught my eye and I’m never one to shy away from perceived value picks. Theegala rebounded from a MC in Canada by recording a T12 at the Memorial. However, more impressive was his response to an opening 77 last week at Pinehurst. Theegala carded a second round 68 to make the cut playing the last 54 holes at even-par, which was quite an accomplishment since only eight players finished below par for the tournament.

Brian Harman -126 vs. Keegan Bradley

With all kinds of success in Connecticut it’s hard to pass on Harman. His price is close to the range that I typically avoid in matchups, but considering he’s won a lot of money in this tournament with the help of three straight top 10s, he’s hard to avoid. While he hasn’t been overwhelming recently, Harman has played the weekend in six straight starts recording a best of T12 in that span. I’m not betting on him winning rather finishing better than his matchup partner.

Sam Burns +118 vs. Corey Conners

Trying to figure out Burns is tough since he’s been all over the place this season. He appears to be in a good spot now, though, with three straight top 15s, including a T9 last week at Pinehurst. He endured a five-start stretch during the middle of the season where he finished T30 or worse with two MCs and just prior to that he recorded four straight top 10s. I’m banking on his current run continuing and his price is favorable.
