Turns out we don’t have to travel too far for this week’s Travelers Championship with a strong field of players assembled just a few days after the season’s third major. One player not making the short trip is U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick, though two of the top-5 at the Country Club are in attendance. Scottie Scheffler has been so good it almost feels like he’s slumping since he hasn’t won a tournament in a while. Scheffler was co-runner-up last week with Rory McIlroy grabbing a T5. Those two emerged as the betting favorites in the outright market. Six of the OWGR top-10 are scheduled to peg it up at TPC River Highlands, where winning scores in the high teens are commonplace. A full field of 156 golfers also presents a number of wagering opportunities with some of the top players featured in tournament matchups. Need to Know
TPC River Highlands is a tidy course that measures 6,852 yards at par 70. It’s hosted this event since 1984 and has undergone a few makeovers since then. A number of bunkers were removed in 2015 to make scoring easier on one of the shortest tracks on Tour. There are just two par-5s and both offer a chance to make up ground. Those holes typically play well under par. We’ve seen different styles succeed on this layout with big hitters like Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson having five titles between them. Overall the course isn’t difficult with low numbers popping up all over the place and that won’t change. In 2018 Watson erased a six-shot deficit shooting a final round 63. And the Tour’s only 58 was recorded on this track by Jim Furyk in 2016. Last year’s event might be the most memorable, though, with Harris English winning an eight-hole playoff.
Travelers Championship Matchup Picks
Keegan Bradley -105 vs. Sungjae Im
Bradley’s familiarity with the area paid off last week with a T7 at Brookline and I’m counting on that being a factor this week. “This is a big event for me and my family and one that I would love to win some day,” he said about the stop in New England. Of course there’s always the chance of a letdown for the Vermont native, but his game is in a good place with five top-10s in his last eight starts with three doubling as top-5s.
Denny McCarthy +104 vs. Webb Simpson
Always in search of value picks I came across McCarthy at plus-odds in this one. Not the name recognition of his head-to-head partner, but McCarthy is bursting with confidence after impressive showings in two big-time settings. He earned a T5 at the Memorial followed by a T7 at last week’s U.S. Open. And his metrics show he could be even better this week. Length isn’t a determining factor at River Highlands, but accuracy is. And McCarthy is accurate with a top-10 Tour ranking in scoring average. And of course the price looks good.
Harris English +118 vs. Kyoung Hoon Lee
Without a doubt a risky play since we haven’t seen a lot of English recently. A two-time winner last season and defending champ after an epic 8-hole playoff, he returned earlier this month after being on the shelf since January. There were signs of him getting stronger making the cut at the U.S. Open after a MC at the Memorial. I’m counting on him being ready to not only play at a competitive level but also go for the repeat. The return is good so dropping a few bucks is the right move with the potential for a big payout.
Patrick Cantlay -111 vs. Rory McIlroy
I know McIlroy is on a heater after his T5 last week, but he’s playing a fourth straight week and he can’t use LIV players as motivation. For Cantlay TPC River Highlands holds a lot of memories. He carded a 10-under 60 as an amateur and has placed among the top-15 in his last four starts. “I feel like (the course) suits my game really well and rewards driving the ball in the fairway and hitting smart iron shots,” he said.
Jordan Spieth +105 vs. Sam Burns
Spieth’s short game, especially on the green, has improved dramatically over the past few months. He’s lost strokes in only two rounds over his last six starts and many feel his game is perfect for the TPC layout. It was back in 2017 when he claimed the title but not so much since. It’s safe to say he’s in a better place than he was in his last two starts here with top-7s in half of his last six starts. And catching Spieth at plus odds is a bonus I can’t pass up.
