Travelers Championship Golf Odds

Just a few days after a thrilling conclusion at the third major of the season, a strong field is ready to peg it up this week at the Travelers Championship. The top of the odds board has a definite major championship feel to it with two of the top-5 finishers at the U.S. Open listed as the betting favorites on the opening line. Rory McIlroy, who was T5 last week and on a run of strong form, emerged at the top of the list with last week’s co-runner-up Scottie Scheffler close behind. Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay round out the top four favorites with all having odds of 12/1 or shorter. In all six of the world’s top-10 are scheduled to tee it up at TPC River Highlands, including defending champ Harris English, who won in an epic eight-hole playoff. Odds Analysis

Keegan Bradley +3300

It was a good week for Bradley at the U.S. Open using his ties to the Boston area and a run of good form to finish T7. And there’s a comfort level for him at this tournament making him a worthwhile pick in the outright market. He missed the cut the last two times, though not from playing poorly. He was below par last year, but this course will yield lower scores and plenty of them. He was second here in 2019 and earned a top-10 in 2017, so he knows what to expect. And his game is in a good place with four top-10s in his last six starts.

Denny McCarthy +6600

If anything McCarthy has to be a more confident player after back-to-back strong showings. Through his first 21 starts he finished inside the top-10 twice. He matched that in his previous two starts with a T5 at the Memorial followed by a T7 at the U.S. Open. He showed the stage wasn’t too big and that first Tour victory is getting closer. He was poised in last week’s closing round and he’s strong in statistical areas that should be a factor at TPC River Highlands. He’s accurate off the tee and ranks among the top-20 in scoring average. And his price is to my liking.

Rory McIlroy +900

It seems like just a matter of time before McIlroy enters the winners circle again. Since a MC at the Texas Open two months ago he’s 6 for 6 with four top-5s, including a win in Canada and runner-up at the Masters. And he hasn’t placed outside the top-20 in any of those starts. But, and there’s always a but, he’s playing in a fourth straight tournament, something he rarely does, and he doesn’t have the LIV golfers to use as motivation. I don’t often bet the favorite and this is a good week to fade Rory.

Jordan Spieth +2200

I’m dipping into this well again because Spieth is just a solid player who has exhibited better putting over the last few tournaments. And he’s been strong in areas that will help on this course. The distance should keep him on the fairway allowing his short game to take over. Spieth ranks among the top-20 in overall putting and around the green. The short track will yield low scores to those who conquer the greens, and Spieth is doing that with three top-7s in his last six starts.

Aaron Wise +3500

Spending a lot of time last week on the first page of the leaderboard, his fade and eventual T27 is something that will stick with Wise, hopefully making him stronger for the challenge ahead. He had a few close calls in the weeks before the U.S. Open with a runner-up at the Memorial and T6 in Mexico, his best stretch of golf this season. He’s another player whose game would seemingly fit on the River Highlands layout, and his price is inviting, too.

Course: TPC River Highlands – 6,852 yards, Par 70

Though TPC River Highlands is one of the shorter courses on Tour, we’ve seen some big hitters have success. Bubba Watson has two wins in the last seven years and long strikers like Hunter Mahan, and Stewart Cink have also escaped victorious. The length levels the playing field and puts an emphasis on accuracy bringing the entire bag into play. The marquee holes are Nos. 15-17 that play around a large body of water to create a thrilling ending. We’ve witnessed several large comeback victories on this track over the years. Watson erased a six-shot deficit in 2018 shooting a final round 63. River Highlands is also the site of the Tour’s only 58, scored by Jim Furyk in 2016.
