After a thrilling weekend of golf on the California coast the PGA Tour heads across the country to just outside Hartford where a loaded field assembles for this week’s Travelers Championship. Jon Rahm will deservedly take the week off after winning at Torrey Pines for his first major championship, but plenty of stars always show up to play this event. Bryson DeChambeau opened as the betting favorite with defending champion Dustin Johnson close behind. The past three titlists are all in attendance with multiple time winners Bubba Watson, Stewart Cink and Phil Mickelson scheduled to peg it up at TPC River Highlands starting Thursday. Odds Analysis
Keegan Bradley +4000
Bradley was in good shape before an MC at the Memorial his last time out. He’d made the cut in 10 straight events earning a pair of top-10s in that span, including a runner-up in the Valspar Championship. And there’s a comfort level for him in this area. “It really feels when I come to this tournament that I’m coming home, which is fun,” he said. He was second here in 2019 and earned a top-10 in 2017, so this is a good spot for him to rebound.
Rickie Fowler +6000
Being on the sidelines for the U.S. Open had to gnaw at Fowler and I expect that will only make him hungrier this week. He does have to pick up his game, though, and we saw evidence of that recently. After two consecutive MCs, Fowler was T8 at the PGA Championship and earned a T11 last time out at Muirfield Village for his best finishes of the season. He hasn’t played this event since 2013 but I sense Fowler is ready to give it a go, and I can’t pass on his price.
Garrick Higgo +5500
The young South African was brought down to earth last week failing to make the cut. No worries, Higgo returns to a shorter course the likes of which he dominated on the Canary Islands Swing of the European Tour recently with a pair of wins and another top-10 in three tournaments. Higgo is making his second non-major start on the PGA Tour so the conditions should be calmer. How’d that first one go, you ask? Well, he went sub-70 in all four rounds winning the Palmetto Championship just a few weeks ago, his fourth win worldwide in less than a year.
Dustin Johnson +1200
He was erratic this spring but Johnson arrives not only as the defending champion but also with a little swagger after getting his game in order. Though still not up to DJ standards he’s coming around after a T10 and T19 in his last two starts. He should be confident knowing he wrecked TPC River Highlands last year with a 64 and 61 in the middle rounds. I don’t like to back the favorites that often, but after watching Rahm come back to win last week I think DJ has a shot. And he isn’t at the top of the odds board so I’m good with that.
Bubba Watson +5500
We haven’t seen the consistency from Bubba lately, but this is definitely a course he feels comfortable on and one that should get him back in proper form, at least that’s what I’m betting on. Only one player has more wins at this event than Watson, who claimed the trophy for the first time in 2010 and followed with victories in 2015 and 2018. Highlands is a joint that suits Watson just fine yielding a runner-up and a fourth place showing along with his three titles.
Course: TPC River Highlands – 6,841 yards, Par 70
The course plays relatively short but we’ve seen some big hitters have success on this layout. Watson has two wins in the last six years and Phil Mickelson went back-to-back in 2001 and 2002. Other long strikers like Hunter Mahan, and Stewart Cink also escaped victorious. The length levels the playing field and puts an emphasis on accuracy bringing the entire bag into play. The marquee holes are Nos. 15-17 that play around a large body of water to create a thrilling ending. We’ve witnessed several large comeback victories on this track over the years. Watson erased a six-shot deficit in 2018 shooting a final round 63. River Highlands is also the site of the Tour’s only 58, which Jim Furyk scored in 2016.
