Odds Analysis

Brooks Koepka +1050

I am very surprised that Koepka has not pulled out of this event after winning the U.S. Open. I find it very hard to believe that he will be focused this week. And keep in mind that other than winning the U.S. Open (twice), Koepka has just one other PGA Tour win. I just can’t see him being in contention this week.

Rory McIlroy +1050

I said on Twitter that Rory made a huge mistake last week by screwing around playing a bunch of other golf courses in New York instead of just Shinnecock. It is just hard to know when Rory is going to be focused on playing golf. Maybe it is this week, but I am sure not backing him until I see him completely focused on golf.

Justin Thomas +1050

I think Thomas should be the favorite this week. He has finished in the top 25 in 16 straight tournaments. He tied for third in this event two years ago. The focus at TPC River Highlands is on hitting fairways and greens and Thomas is great that those two things.

Jordan Spieth +1050

I say it every week that I am not backing Spieth until he figures out how to putt. He is the defending champion of this event and a great ball striker but I want no part of him right now.

Patrick Reed +1550

Reed may actually have a letdown this week, as he was in contention for the win at the U.S. Open and then faded. He has played better in this event recently with a tie for 11th and a tie for 5th the last two years. I still think he is overvalued at these odds.

Jason Day +1650

What happened to Day last week at the U.S. Open? He had been going really well and then last week he was a disaster. He might be the one player who can turn it back on but I am leery.

Webb Simpson +2250

I think Webb has some value this week on this course. He has been putting it really well this season and he has been solid at TPC River Highlands. He finished tied for 5th in 2013 and he tied for 8th last year.

Bubba Watson +2550

I think Bubba has some value this week at these odds. He won this event in 2015 and finished second in 2012 and he was fourth in 2013. He seems to have an affinity for playing this course.

Course: We will see some birdies this week and scoring will be a lot better than it was last week at Shinnecock Hills. TPC River Highlands is a par 70 that measures 6,841 yards. It is a Pete Dye design that has hosted a PGA Tour event for 35 straight years. The finishing holes are exciting, as 15, 16 and 17 are played around a four-acre lake. Scoring is normally very good on this course and it saw the only 58 on the PGA Tour, when Jim Furyk set the record in 2016. The winning score has been 10-under or better every year since 1993.
