Going from coast to coast the past several years puts the 124th edition of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina one year after Wyndham Clark toppled the field for his first major championship at Los Angeles Country Club. Two years prior Matthew Fitzpatrick won his first major in Brookline, Mass. and at Torrey Pines in 2021 Jon Rahm won his first major. In fact, the last five U.S. Open winners were all first-time major champions. If another first-time major winner is to emerge he’ll have to get by the best player in the world. Scottie Scheffler won for the fifth time this season besting the field at the Memorial and enters as a prohibitive favorite in the outright market. We typically see odds much closer in majors but not this time, a clear sign of Scheffler’s dominance. He’s also a big favorite over some darn good players in tournament matchups. Need to Know
The Pinehurst Resort consists of nine – NINE – 18-hole golf courses with each referred to by a number since they couldn’t come up with names for all of them. No. 2 has long been recognized as one of the top courses in the country and hosts the U.S. Open for the fourth time. The property has also hosted the Ryder Cup among various prestigious events. A decade ago at Pinehurst Martin Kaymer was unconscious winning the U.S. Open by eight shots, the third largest margin in tournament history. He hasn’t won anything since then, though. A lengthy par 70 that stretches to 7,548 yards, getting to the greens is difficult. But not as hard as navigating the sloped landing areas that can cause golf balls to roll aimlessly. That serves as the main defense with Johnny Miller once saying landing a shot on the green is “like trying to hit a ball on top of a VW Beetle.”
U.S. Open Matchup Picks
Martin Kaymer +108 vs. Chesson Hadley
It’s been a long drought for Kaymer with his last win of any kind taking place at Pinehurst in 2014. But what a win it was. Kaymer was dialed in for all four rounds beating the field by eight swings, a mark bettered in the last century by only Tiger Woods’ 15-shot victory in 2000. There were some extenuating circumstances the led to the drought, but we’ve seen better and more consistent play from him on the LIV tour. Kaymer is coming off his best finish this year with a T9 last week.
Ludvig Aberg -110 vs. Viktor Hovland
A MC at the PGA Championship last month could have been the start of Aberg’s descent. He had finished among the top 25 in each of his previous eight starts with a pair of runner-up showings and three additional top 10s. It’s hard to be that good for that long but Aberg managed. And proving that he’s dialed in he responded to the MC by earning a share of fifth at the Memorial and hasn’t been fazed in marquee tournaments.
Sepp Straka -110 vs. Sam Burns
A solid ball-striker with impeccable accuracy, Straka has displayed those traits in consecutive T5 finishes. Going back to the middle of March Straka has placed among the top 16 in seven of nine starts with three finishes among the top 5 and another T8. He also has a little score to settle with the U.S. Open after a MC in his last two starts. He has the skillset and confidence to successfully maneuver his way around Pinehurst.
Collin Morikawa +100 vs. Rory McIlroy
Over the last two months Morikawa has done everything but win. Starting with his T3 at the Masters in April, Morikawa placed among the top 25 in seven straight starts with four of those doubling as top 5s, including the last three. He was one shot behind Scheffler last week at the Memorial and finished fourth in both starts before that at the Schwab and the PGA Championship. It’s hard to say this isn’t the best run of form in his career.
Brooks Koepka -120 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
Major championships have a way of inspiring Koepka even though he’s finished outside the top 25 in his last three starts. That doesn’t mean his game isn’t thriving, which it is after claiming his record fourth LIV Golf title last month in Singapore. There was a stretch a few years back where he won half of the eight major championships, including back-to-back U.S. Open titles. He also earned a top 5 when Pinehurst last hosted in 2014.
