The best golfers in the word assemble this week in North Carolina for the 124th edition of the U.S. Open, the season’s third major championship. But all eyes will be on Scottie Scheffler, who enters with an astounding five PGA Tour victories this season, the most entering this tournament since 1980. Scheffler is so far ahead of everyone else that his opening odds are the lowest I’ve ever seen for a major and he’s the only player shorter than 10/1. With the No. 1 ranked player in the world operating in another universe, odds for the rest of the field standout. Now that he’s no longer a member of the best-to-never-win-a-major club, Xander Schauffele is positioned as the second favorite. Schauffele won last month’s PGA Championship and has finished among the top 10 in six of his last seven U.S. Open starts. Wyndham Clark edged Rory McIlroy by one swing to capture last year’s title with Scheffler finishing third. Odds Analysis
Ludvig Aberg +2505
The youngster has been fearless since helping the Europeans win the Ryder Cup last year. And his first twirl on the PGA Tour has been filled with plenty of ups. Playing big tournaments hasn’t affected him with a solo eighth at THE PLAYERS and runner-up at the Masters, so his debut here is no concern. Aberg is one of the few in the field to test Pinehurst previously in the 2019 U.S. Amateur and he bounced back from a MC at the PGA Championship to earn a top 5 at the Memorial last week.
Tony Finau +6513
Now the president of the best-player-yet-to-win-a-major club, Finau enters with little fanfare but strong results. There will be times when Pinehurst allows bit hitters to let it rip and few do that better than Finau. He’s sharpened other parts of his game leading to more consistent results while improving his overall skillset. He’s collected three top-10s among his eight top 20s this season, including last week when the finished T8 at the Memorial. He also had his best finish in his last 10 major championship starts with a T18 at the PGA Championship in May.
Matt Fitzpatrick +5010
A ball-strikers dream puts Fitzpatrick in prime position to repeat his 2022 U.S. Open victory. With scoring at a premium last week, Fitz was one of seven players to finish multiple shots under par earning a share of fifth place at the Memorial. It was his second top 5 and fifth top 25 over his last eight starts. He closed last week with a 69 matching the lowest round of the day and enters with plenty of confidence.
Brooks Koepka +2505
Always a threat when it comes time for a major, Koepka got greased up for this week by capturing his LIV best fourth individual title in Singapore last month and cashed a T9 last week in Houston. Koepka was around in 2014 finishing fourth at the U.S. Open held at Pinehurst and just last year prevailed at the PGA Championship. He finished outside the top 25 in his last three majors but you can’t ignore his history.
Xander Schauffele +1101
Playing a major for the first time as a major champion is exhilarating for Schauffele, who finally got that monkey off his back last month at the PGA Championship. He entered that tournament off a second at the Wells Fargo and followed with a T8 at the Memorial showing no lasting effects from that monumental victory. Schauffele is second to Scheffler in plenty of Tour metrics but the X-man is No. 1 in the all-around and has finished among the top 10 in 14 starts this season.
Course: Pinehurst Resort and Country Club (No. 2) – 7,543 yards, par 70
Referred to simply as Pinehurst, the stock par 70 plays long at over 7,500 yards and will be hosting the U.S. Open for the fourth time and first since 2014. More than 25 golfers who took a twirl around Pinehurst a decade ago are back to test the layout again, including champion Martin Kaymer, who had a good feel for the course that week. The current LIV golfer finished at 9-under winning by eight shots, the third biggest margin in the tournament’s history. The length is just one factor on what was a difficult layout in 2014 and I’m sure still is. Hitting greens in regulation is a priority turning this into a second shot course. And tiered greens are another obstacle that field will have to overcome.
