One of the best options each week when betting golf tournaments is to bet the head-to-head matchups. This is a great week for matchups, with golf’s second major, the U.S. Open beginning on Thursday. All of the world’s top players are in the field and there are some great matchups on the board. We went 3-2 with the matchups at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last week. Let’s look at the odds and picks for this week’s U.S. Open.

U.S. Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Shinnecock Hills is long at 7,445 yards and it is a par 70. It has the looks of a links style course that you would see in the UK. The fairways are a bit wider than they were four years ago, but the greens are still small and very hard. It is hard to see how any of the short hitters will have any chance to contend this week because driving distance will be everything on this course.
Dustin Johnson -160 vs. Henrik Stenson
It is all about driving distance for me with the matchups this week. Johnson is not only the World No. 1 player, but he is also 10th in driving distance on the PGA Tour. Stenson is very good in hitting fairways and hitting greens, but he is 179th in driving distance. I will lay the price and take D.J. in this matchup.
Justin Thomas -120 vs. Jordan Spieth
I will continue to go against Spieth when given the opportunity until he figures out how to putt. It helps in this matchup that Thomas is simply the better player right now and he is also 8th on the PGA Tour in driving distance, while Spieth is 72nd. I will take Thomas here.
Jon Rahm -115 vs. Rickie Fowler
I know that Rickie could contend this week, but I think Rahm can win. He has a big edge in driving distance, as he ranks 19th on the PGA Tour, while Fowler is 96th. I will take Rahm in this matchup.
Tony Finau -135 vs. Byeong Hun An
Finau is ranked 2nd on the PGA Tour in driving distance, so he should love playing this course. An had his moment in the sun earlier this month but lost in a playoff. I still don’t think he has recovered from that defeat. I will take Finau here.
Luke List -130 vs. Russell Henley
Another big edge in terms of driving distance is this matchup, as List ranks 4th, while Henley is just 134th. There is also no question that right now List is the better player. I will lay the short price and take List.
