Odds Analysis
Dustin Johnson +725
Johnson is coming off a win last week, as he regained the World No. ranking from Justin Thomas. There is no reason not to like Johnson in this event, as distance is a key factor at Shinnecock. Johnson leads the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green and he is a deserving favorite this week.
Justin Rose +1153
Rose is coming of a tie for 6th at Memorial and a win at Colonial. He is seventh on the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green. He has won the U.S. Open before and there is no reason to think he won’t contend this week.
Rory McIlroy +1269
Rory has looked pretty good, but the problem with taking him is that he simply doesn’t win enough to be listed as one of the favorites. It also doesn’t help that he has just one top 10 finish in the U.S. Open since winning in 2011.
Justin Thomas +1429
Thomas is definitely capable of winning any event. He is second on the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green and he is also sixth in Shots Gained: Approach the Green and he ranks eighth in scrambling. There is a little bit of value in Thomas at these odds.
Jason Day +1655
Day has two wins this year and he leads the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Putting. He is also fourth in scrambling and that will be a key stat to consider this week in addition to distance.
Jon Rahm +2259
I think Rahm has a chance to win this week and these are nice odds. He is an emotional player and the needs to keep his emotions in check, but he hits the ball a ton and he is 20th in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green.
Branden Grace +4050
He has two top five finishes in his last three starts. He has played really well at the U.S. Open in the past with a tie for 4th at Chambers Bay and a tie for 5th at Oakmont. He is 23rd on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained.
Rafa Cabrera Bello +8050
One of my longshots this week is Cabrera Bello who has finished T-17, T-8 and fourth in this last three events. He is 19th on the PGA Tour in Shots Gained: Tee-to Green and he is seventh in Shots Gained: Approach the Green. I think he can contend and we get him at big odds.
Xander Schauffele +9783
Another of my longshots is Schauffele who is not afraid of the big stage, as he won The 2017 Tour Championship. He is 45h in driving distance on the PGA Tour. He could be a surprise at big odds this week.
Course: Shinnecock Hills is a long par 70 that measures 7,440 yards. It has not hosted a U.S. Open since 2004, but it has hosted four in history. It is the oldest incorporated golf club in the U.S. It hosted the U.S. Open in 1896 and then didn’t host it again until 1986. It also hosted the U.S. Open in 1995. The course is about as close to a links style layout as you will find, so European players could do well this week. Shinnecock is much different than it was in 2004, as the fairways are wider and the greens are bigger. The course is also much longer, as it was just 6,996 yards in 2004.
