2018-Golf-Valero-Texas-Open-Odds-preview-Odds

The PGA Tour heads to Texas this week for the Valero Texas Open with Sergio Garcia listed as the favorite. It is a relatively weak field this week with only six of the world’s top 30 golfers expected to compete. Garcia is a lukewarm favorite at odds of +1400, while Charley Hoffman is the second choice at odds of +1700. The only other player listed at odds of less than +2500 is Matt Kuchar at +1800. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Valero Texas Open.

Odds Analysis

Sergio Garcia +1400

I get it that Sergio is favored, as he is the highest ranked player in the field, but he has only played at TPC San Antonio once and that was in 2010 when he finished in a tie for 45th. I am looking elsewhere.

Charley Hoffman +1700

You can make a strong case that Hoffman should be the favorite this week. He won this event in 2016 and he has two other finishes in the top three. He has three top 20 finishes in his last three starts overall including a tie for 12th at the Masters.

Matt Kuchar +1800

I think Kuchar is overvalued at these odds. He will probably finish in the top 30 but he probably won’t win. He has just one top ten finish at TPC San Antonio, a tie for 4th in 2014.

Luke List +2500

It is easy to make a case for List being in contention this week. He has three top 25 finishes in his last four starts including a tie for 3rd last week. He is sixth on the PGA Tour in shots gained: tee-to-green.

Ryan Moore +2800

Moore tied for 18th last year and he also tied for 8th in this event in 2012. He has three top 10 finishes this season including a tie for 16th last week.

Beau Hossler +3800

Hossler has five top 20 finishes this season, including a tie for 16th last week. The field this week is weak and Hossler could contend for the win.

Chesson Hadley +3800

Hadley tied for 4th in this event in 2015. He is trending in the right direction with a tie for 18th in Houston and a tie for 7th last week.

Brendan Steele +4500

Steele won this event in 2011 and he has three other finishes of 13th or better. He is my longshot pick at odds of +4500.

Course: The AT&T Oaks course at TPC San Antonio is a par 72 that measures 7,435 yards. Sergio Garcia was actually a course consultant for Greg Norman when the course was designed in 2010. The course is considered a ball striker’s course where strokes gained tee-to-green is a key stat to keep in mind. The winning score has not been that great through the years, with 8-under par to 14-under par the winning scores since 2010.
