Signature Events are designed to attract the game’s top players, and the PGA Tour has been successful in doing that since the implementation. However, you can’t account for babies and injuries thus two of the sport’s biggest names will not be competing in this week’s Wells Fargo Championship. Scottie Scheffler will let someone else win a tournament since he’s off with his expecting wife and Ludvig Aberg is out resting creaky knees. That leaves the remainder of the limited, no-cut field to battle with the only three-time winner of this tournament Rory McIlroy the outright betting favorite. Defending champ Wyndham Clark should be thrilled Scheffler isn’t competing. In his two seconds this season Clark was behind Scheffler. With most of the top players in attendance we see some interesting matchups on the board. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of updated odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
Ahead of the 2018 edition Quail Hollow Golf Club underwent a major renovation adding length and reducing par. More recently the club had another facelift in preparation for this tournament and next year’s PGA Championship. At 7,558 yards it’s a treacherous track that was a difficult par 72. Many of the birdie opportunities dried up after the initial makeover making it an even tougher par 71. Clark was not fazed by the layout last year establishing a tournament scoring record 268 to win by four shots. It was the largest margin since Rory McIlroy won the 2015 edition by seven swings. It’s a long ride so look for plenty of drivers with distance being a key. With generous fairways, accuracy off the tee isn’t as important as it is on other courses. Getting to the greens should be easy and knocking down the putts will put you in contention. The closing stretch known as the Green Mile is one of the most difficult on Tour.
Wells Fargo Championship Matchup Picks
Chris Kirk -110 vs. Adam Schenk
I didn’t back Kirk in the outright but I feel confident about him in this matchup. His metrics have improved over the last few months and the results followed. He hasn’t been bad with just one MC in 10 starts but he had a stretch finishing outside the top 25 in six straight outings. He regrouped for a T16 at the Masters and most recently carded four sub-70 rounds for a top 10 at the RBC Heritage. He also has a win at The Sentry season-opener in January.
Max Homa +106 vs. Collin Morikawa
One of two players with multiple WFC victories, Homa has been a delight at Quail Hollow. His 2022 victory came at TPC Potomac but his 2019 title was a solid 15-under here with his title defense last year getting him a share of eighth. Homa also worked his magic at the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow going 4-0-0 for the victorious Americans. It’s hard to avoid Max at plus-odds, so I’m not doing that.
Xander Schauffele +108 vs. Rory McIlroy
The one player who enjoys Quail Hollow more than Homa is McIlroy so it might be a mistake to go against him. However, I’m not backing just anyone in this matchup. Catching Schauffele at plus-odds is a treat and he’s been on the brink of a win all season with seven top 10s in 10 individual stroke play events. He’s gotten progressively better in his four WFC starts finishing T14 in 2021 followed by a runner-up last year.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +100 vs. Hideki Matsuyama
Fitzpatrick seems like a natural for Quail Hollow. With tremendous length off the tee and few fairway distractions, Fitz can definitely take advantage of the strong parts of his game. The lengthy par 5s will be a factor and he currently ranks T6 in par-5 scoring. He’s in fine form as well with three top 11s in his last five starts with no finish worse than T28 in that span.
Alex Noren +100 vs. Si Woo Kim
Noren hasn’t missed a cut this season, which we don’t have to worry about this week. But it does show that he’s on top of his game. He placed among the top 25 in seven of his 13 starts including in each of his last six appearances that resulted in four top 15s. And Noren is coming off his best finish of the year when he carded three rounds of 66 or better to finish third at the Byron Nelson.
