For just the second time in its existence the Wells Fargo Championship will be played on a different course. The full-field of players assembles this week at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm as the tournament takes a one year break from Quail Hollow, which is prepping for the Presidents Cup in a few months. Rory McIlroy has enjoyed plenty of success at this tournament returning as the defending champ and only three-time winner. McIlroy is a big favorite on the PGA outright odds board, but he is making his debut on the TPC Potomac course, which last hosted a Tour event in 2018. A number of top players are in attendance setting up some interesting matchup betting opportunities. Head over to BookMaker.eu for a complete list of updated odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
The first thing to know is that this is a different course than what the WFC field is used to, but it’s no stranger to many of the golfers. TPC Potomac has hosted over 20 PGA events in the past, most recently the 2017 and 2018 Quicken Loans National. Francesco Molinari was the last winner on the track claiming the QLN crown by a whopping eight swings. The course maxes out at 7,160 yards, but narrow fairways and small greens make it play tougher. And it was a beast in 2017 with a scoring average of 71.46 making it the hardest par-70 in a non major that season. A number of players took a twirl around the course, however, the significance of the passage of time will have a bearing on how those players perform this week.
Wells Fargo Championship Matchup Picks
Abraham Ancer -105 vs. Russell Henley
Ancer hit the trifecta which is why I’m backing him in this matchup. He’s played well all season with just three MCs in 27 starts, and he’s had success in this tournament and on the TPC Potomac course. I think he’ll be more relaxed after struggling in his national open in Mexico where he placed T42. Get him away from the distractions and in an event he finished as runner-up last year and on a course he shares the scoring record I’ll back Abe all day.
Corey Conners +110 vs. Rory McIlroy
We saw the prohibitive favorite go wire-to-wire last week and McIlroy is in a similar position on the odds board. He is the defending champ and he’s won this tournament three times, which is two more than any other player. There is a caveat, though, all the past success came at Quail Hollow. Precision iron play ruled the last two events at TPC Potomac and Conners is one of the best ball-strikers on Tour. Recent success is another reason for backing Conners. He placed among the top-12 in three of his last four starts, including a T6 at the Masters. And the plus odds are helpful.
Marc Leishman -105 vs. Paul Casey
Leishman is one of a handful of players in the field to compete in the 2017 and 2018 QNL with strong results for his effort. He was T5-T13 at TPC Potomac showing off his balanced game by wielding wicked sticks in both tournaments. He’s also been steady of late finishing T38 or better in 10 of his last 12 stroke-play starts. This is also a home game of sorts for Leishman, who resides in Virginia.
Sergio Garcia -120 vs. Webb Simpson
Courses similar to TPC Potomac have given Garcia fits in the past, but he enters this one with plenty of positives. He’s hanging inside the OWGR top-50 despite not having a top-10 this year. He ended 2021 with a T7 at Mayakoba and he placed among the top-40 in each of his five individual events in 2022. Garcia is still one of the best tee-to-green on Tour and some might say “he’s close” to breaking through.
Tyrrell Hatton +115 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick
I’ll preface this pick by saying backing Hatton is a risk. He needs to improve his iron play otherwise he doesn’t have a chance on this course. But considering his strong play this spring and that he leads the Tour in strokes gained: putting, I’m willing to take a chance, especially at his price. I really like Fitzpatrick and think he’s going to have a strong summer, but his MC at the RBC Heritage ended a nice run, and as we know things come in waves on the Tour.
