Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +650
Rory has won this event twice, so it is no surprise he is listed as the favorite. He owns the course record in this tournament and almost always plays well. He finished in the top 10 in this event every year from 2012 to 2016. Quail Hollow plays long and McIlroy is 14th in Par-5 scoring on the PGA Tour this season. I think he is a deserving favorite and worth a play even at these odds.
Justin Thomas +900
Thomas is capable of winning any event he enters. He can get to No. 1 in the world without winning this week, as he just needs to finish in a tie for 12th or better. I sure can’t argue with taking Thomas, but he is still my second choice this week behind Rory.
Rickie Fowler +1000
Fowler won this event in 2012 but I think he is overvalued at these odds. He simply doesn’t win enough to be considered a strong favorite and that is the type of respect he is getting with these odds.
Hideki Matsuyama +2000
It is hard to know what to expect on a weekly basis from Matsuyama. He can play great and contend for the win or miss the cut. I am not taking him this week even at these odds, as I simply don’t know which Matsuyama is going to show up.
Jason Day +2000
Day played poorly last week in New Orleans, but this course should suit him well with his long distance and solid putting. I think there is some value on Day at odds of 20-1.
Patrick Reed +2000
I was surprised last week that Reed played as well as he did in New Orleans coming off the Masters wins. That doesn’t mean I am taking him to win this week, as he is a bit overvalued at these odds.
Paul Casey +2450
Casey finally won a PGA Tournament event at the Valspar Championship but he has really never done much at Quail Hollow in his career. He does do well on Par 5’s, so this course should suit him, but I am still looking elsewhere.
Phil Mickelson +2500
I think Phil is overvalued at these odds, as this field is very strong and Mickelson simply doesn’t win much these days.
Tiger Woods +2500
I think the same thing can be said about Tiger, as he is overvalued. He didn’t even play that well at Quail Hollow six years ago. Tiger isn’t accurate off the tee and I haven’t seen him putt well enough to beat a very good field.
Tommy Fleetwood +2800
There is a lot of value on Fleetwood at these odds. He continues to play well on the PGA Tour and has proven he can beat the best fields in the world. He should be getting more respect and be listed at odds of less than 20-1.
Kevin Kisner +4000
My longshot this week is Kisner who played well last week in New Orleans until the final round. Kisner loves to play Quail Hollow and said he spends a lot of time on this course. I will take a shot on Kisner at odds of 40-1.
Course: This event is back at Quail Hollow after a year away and that means a tough test of golf. Quail Hollow is a par 71 that measures 7,554 yards. It was the toughest course on the PGA Tour in 2017 and it wasn’t close, as it was a half shot tougher than Augusta National. The course is known for its closing stretch of holes known as the “Green Mile.” Golfer who win at Quail Hollow normally do everything well and that means Strokes Gained: Tee to Green is a key statistic to consider this week.
