WGC Bridgestone Invitational Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. Firestone is a par 70 that plays long at 7,400 yards, but accuracy off the tee has proven to be very important through the years. Hitting greens in regulation has also been critical, as has strokes gained: putting.
Dustin Johnson -165 vs. Tiger Woods
Give me Johnson in this matchup. He won this event in 2016 and he is coming off a win last week. Tiger is playing better, and I think he will eventually win again, but I don’t think it will come against a top field. I think he is more likely to win when most of the top players in the world are not in the field. That is not the case this week.
Tommy Fleetwood -120 vs. Brooks Koepka
Fleetwood finished in a tie for 6th last week at Glen Abbey and he is simply in better form than Koepka. I have said this before and will say it again about Koepka; he simply doesn’t win many events other than the U.S. Open. He has only one other PGA Tour win. I will take Fleetwood in this matchup.
Justin Rose -155 vs. Jordan Spieth
Rose has been really good at Firestone in his career with a tie for 2nd, a tie for 3rd, a tie for 4th and a tie for 5th. Spieth simply isn’t playing as well as he did a year ago and right now Rose is the better player.
Jon Rahm -110 vs. Francesco Molinari
I can’t see anything other than a letdown for Molinari after winning the Open. Rahm had a bad second round last year in this event, but he is 15th on the PGA Tour in GIR and he goes against Molinari who has never finished better than a tie for 15th in this event.
Patrick Cantlay -125 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
You might be surprised to see Cantlay favored in this matchup, but I am not. Cantlay is one of my longshots this week and I am still not a fan of DeChambeau. He will oftentimes have one bad round that will torpedo his tournament as he did last week overseas. I will take Cantlay in this matchup.
