With the Florida swing over, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club. This is the only tournament that deviates from traditional stroke-play and lasts five days instead of four. The field of 64 players is divided into 16 groups of four with round-robin play over the first three days starting on Wednesday. The winners from each bracket will advance to the weekend’s round of 16. After that, single-elimination knockout matches take place through the final round until a champion is crowned. World No. 1 Jon Rahm top the odds board and is a massive favorite in his first-round matchup with Sebastian Munoz. Odds listed below are for Wednesday’s first-round matchups with odds for the next two rounds posted later. Need to Know
The match-play and round-robin format over the first three days open a number of different betting options. Odds will be posted for each of the three round-robin matches that take place over the first three days of the tournament. Each player will go head-to-head with the others in his group with the winner advancing to the round of 16. The tournament has apparently found a home in Texas with Austin CC serving as host since 2016. It’s as if the field will be playing two separate courses the way it’s set up. The front nine rolls through the Texas hills while the back nine play alongside the Colorado River and Lake Austin. Players shouldn’t get too caught up in the course, though. The format requires more attention to your game and opponent. Key areas for success are tee-to-green accuracy and a strong short game. The ability to play the wind is also helpful.
WGC Dell Technologies Match Play – Round 1 Matchup Picks
Richard Bland +150 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
This pick has more to do with DeChambeau’s health rather than Bland’s recent play. DeChambeau has been shelved since early January due to wrist and ankle injuries and is making his first start since a MC at the Farmers. That first round after dealing with injuries is always difficult and while Bryson may come around the next two days, I expect some hiccups in the opening matchup. A consistent performer on the DP World Tour, Bland just needs to hit a few shots for a nice payout.
Kevin Kisner -110 vs. Marc Leishman
A two-time finalist and 2019 winner of this event, Kisner is a fixture in the match-play portion giving him plenty of value in this head-to-head. He’s also had a hot start to 2022 with three top-10s in seven starts, including a solo fourth a few weeks back at THE PLAYERS. Kisner is in a tough group that includes Justin Thomas and in order to reach the knockout round winning this head to head is imperative.
Maverick McNealy +115 vs. Joaquin Niemann
You get the feeling McNealy is playing with house money and that makes him dangerous. The last man into the field when Sam Burns withdrew, the former Stanford product has a date with Niemann in the first round. McNealy has been consistent this season going 11 for 12 with a solo second in Napa and more recently a T7 at the Genesis. He was a respectable T46 at THE PLAYERS and definitely has game or he wouldn’t be here. But with nothing to lose expect him to let it all go, at least in this first round.
Patrick Cantlay -180 vs. Keith Mitchell
I’m not a big fan of backing a player, no matter how good he is, at the price attached to Cantlay. But I do make exceptions every so often and this is one of those times. A strong performer in match-play events and the reigning FedExCup champ, Cantlay has enjoyed a strong start to this season. I’ll let last week’s MC slide and continue to back one of the hottest players on Tour, even if the price isn’t to my liking.
Bubba Watson -105 vs. Abraham Ancer
It doesn’t matter where Watson is positioned in the rankings he always seems to perform well in this event. He emerged as winner of his pool six times and won the 2018 title as the 39th ranked player in the world. He was the lowest seed in his foursome last year eventually winning a sudden death playoff to advance to the knockout round again. Finding value in matchups is always a goal and there is plenty in backing Watson in his first-round scrap with Ancer.
