Following his Gold Medal triumph in the Toyko Olympics, Xander Schauffele is part of a stacked 66 player field that will compete this week in the World Golf Championship FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Nine of the top-10 players in the FedEx Cup standings are scheduled to peg it up in the final WGC event of the season taking place at TPC Southwind in Memphis with the notable exception being world No. 1 Jon Rahm. Justin Thomas is back to defend his 2020 title looking for his third victory in four years at this event. However, 2019 titlist Brooks Koepka sits atop the odds board with five players positioned with shorter than 20/1 odds. A stellar field makes for tantalizing matchups. Need to Know
With a limited field this is a no-cut tournament, so don’t get discouraged if the player you’re backing has a rough start. While the TPC Southwind layout underwent some changes ahead of hosting the WGC for the first time in 2019, it’s still a fairly easy course that yielded a sub-70 scoring average a year ago. The old dairy farm takes players through a natural stretch of lakes, ponds and creeks over 7,233 yards. Long and straight off the tee is a bonus, as is avoiding the several water hazards. But this is more of a second-shot course and hitting greens in regulation is huge. With a small field of talented golfers it’s hard to find value in the matchups. I’ll do my best, though, to try and make us some money.
WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational Matchup Picks
Harris English -110 vs. Matt Fitzpatrick
English cooled off a bit with his T46 at The Open, but it’s hard to look the other way when it comes to his game. He’s doubled his career win total this season with his second victory of the campaign just a few weeks ago at the Travelers when he sealed the deal with a closing 65. He’s also had some success at TPC Southwind prior to the WGC with a win and an additional top-10. Like I said there aren’t many value picks in the field, but at his price English is close.
Daniel Berger -115 vs. Patrick Cantlay
Another Southwind stalward, Berger has a pair of wins pre-WGC days and finished runner-up last year in his four starts on this track. And you can’t complain about his recent form. He’s coming off a T8 at The Open Championship rallying after an opening 70. And he also has a top-10 in the U.S. Open and a podium finish in the Byron Nelson all in the past few months.
Brooks Koepka -125 vs. Jordan Spieth
I really wanted to go with Spieth in this matchup, but this particular event has been like a major for Koepka, and we all know how well he performs on the biggest stage. He won the first WGC event here in 2019 and finished as runner-up in his title defense. Toss in a pair of podium finishes in the pre-WGC days and Koepka is as comfortable at Southwind as he is on any other course. Oh, and top-6s in his last three starts makes the argument even better.
Will Zalatoris +105 vs. Abraham Ancer
The Z train has come off the rails lately making this a good time for Zalatoris to rebound. After a sizzling start to the season he finished outside the top-50 twice with a MC and WD in his last four appearances. That’s probably the reason why he’s offered at plus-odds, and I’m counting on a return to past form that got him 13 top-25s in his first 19 starts.
Tony Finau +110 vs. Scottie Scheffler
It’s rare to see Finau kind of fly under the radar, but I get the feeling oddsmakers are taking him too lightly this week. He did have a rare back-to-back MC in June in the U.S. Open and Travelers, but he responded with a T15 in The Open and a T28 in the 3M Open, so his game isn’t far off. He hasn’t played his best at Southwind, but it’s a track that seemingly fits his game. And I’m banking on better things this week.
