It’s not a major but it sure has the feel of one with a star-studded field assembled for the first World Golf Championship of the year, the WGC Workday Championship at The Concession. It’s a familiar event in an unfamiliar setting thanks to COVID forcing the event to be relocated to Bradenton, Fla. from its usual stop in Mexico. The Concession Golf Club makes its debut as Tour host potentially leveling the playing field. And what a field it is with the top-15 ranked players in the world teeing it up. OWGR No. 1 Dustin Johnson is the betting favorite as he goes for his fourth win on a third different track. A limited field of 72 golfers with no cuts means tournament matchups will be played to their entirety, and there are a number of them available. Need to Know
The Concession has been trying to get in the rotation since opening in 2006 and finally it arrived. It’s a long track at nearly 7,500 yards and it’s also new to many players in the field. The length, numerous water hazards and plenty of bunkers make this a challenging test even for the pros. The good news is that everyone will have time to figure it out since the limited field eliminates the cut line. It will take every stick in the bag to be in the hunt come Sunday. One player who has experience on this track is Bryson DeChambeau, who won the 2015 NCAA Championship. Does that give him an advantage? I guess we’ll find out. Patience is a virtue and a strong approach game is a necessity.
WGC Workday Championship at The Concession Matchup Picks
Xander Schauffele +120 vs. Dustin Johnson
It probably isn’t the best move to go against Johnson since he’s the hottest player on the planet. But Schauffele isn’t far behind and DJ’s woes with the drive last week are something to watch. He got away with it at The Riv but a similar outing is deadly at The Concession. And it’s not just about DJ since the X-man has a streak of 16 straight top-25s that includes four runner-up showings and another pair of top-5s in his last nine starts. This matchup screams value and I’m taking the plus odds.
Bernd Wiesberger -130 vs. Lee Westwood
I’ve backed Wiesberger on the European Tour before and he’s done well for me. This matchup has a Euro feel to it with two mainstays on that tour going at it. Wiesberger has been consistently good, though he hasn’t matched the success he enjoyed just two years ago when he won thrice. His foray to the PGA Tour paid off at the RSM Classic when he shot 17-under for a share of fourth.
Bryson DeChambeau -110 vs. Tony Finau
I’m counting on DeChambeau rekindling some memories from his NCAA triumph on this layout. And you know his eager to get back in form after missing the cut last week. DeChambeau will have to be at the top of his game to win this matchup since Finau has a playoff loss, two runners-up and a T4 in his last four starts. Maybe he’s due for clunker.
Rory McIlroy +130 vs. Jon Rahm
There are a bunch of matchups pitting the best golfers against each other and this is another. When it’s hard to distinguish between the two it’s always good to take the better value pick. And can you go wrong with McIlroy at this price? Sure he missed the cut last week at the Genesis, but there is something for him to play for and that’s the WGC grand slam. There’s that and also getting back into a groove.
Daniel Berger -120 vs. Webb Simpson
Another Floridian ready to test the waters at The Concession, Berger has been on an absolute tear for the last year or so. His win at Pebble Beach a few weeks ago was his third top-10 in four starts and his second title among seven top-5s over the last 12 months. His approach game has been strong over that time, something that will definitely give keep him in contention this week.
