With the fall portion of the PGA Tour season winding down, the 16th edition of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba gets an infusion of stars after a light week in Bermuda. Scottie Scheffler, who just recently got knocked from the top spot in the OWGR, headlines the bunch as the betting favorite in the outright market. However, all eyes will be on two-time defending champ Viktor Hovland as he goes for a rare three-peat. It’s hard to win a tournament twice in a row and doing it three times hasn’t been accomplished in over a decade. Hovland hit the board as the second favorite with some of his best outings coming in tropical locations making him an inviting option in tournament matchups. Need to Know
El Camaleon Golf Club opened in 2004 and has hosted every Mayakoba tournament since the event’s inception in 2007. The course was lengthened to 7,034 over the last few years, still short by Tour standards. It is a resort course, so there shouldn’t be too many problems for the pros with winning numbers averaging around 20-under. But stray too far off the fairways and trouble looms with water, forest and swampland that could impact scores. Hovland tied a tournament record with last year’s four-shot win, just the second time in 15 playings the winning margin was more than two-shots. The previous 12 two-time winners at an event failed to get the hat trick so maybe 13 is Hovland’s lucky number.
World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Matchup Picks
Viktor Hovland +107 vs. Scottie Scheffler
Hovland is an inviting pick at his price in this matchup. He’s played a lot more golf than Scheffler since the end of last season and he’s done well with a top-5 on the DP World Tour and a T5 at the ZOZO and T21 at the CJ CUP. He’s also been a beast on the tropical stops with his two wins here along with Puerto Rico and at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Scheffler’s lone start since September was a T45 at the CJ CUP putting Hovland in prime position to strike.
Justin Lower +135 vs. Joel Dahmen
This is my first time backing Lower, though he’s been on my radar after some successful showings in recent tournaments. He is debuting in this event which is likely why his price is where it is, but he’s been good on resort layouts and has proven to be a battler in the elements. He has two top-10s this season following his T8 in Bermuda to go along with another top-20. He’s playing well with impressive stats leading to strong finishes.
Tony Finau -105 vs. Billy Horschel
He hasn’t seen live action since a sparkling 3-1-0 record at the Presidents Cup, but Finau’s experience and knowledge at El Camaleon set him apart from others in the same position. This is his seventh trip to Mayakoba with a pair of top-10s and a T16 among his previous visits. And he closed last season on a positive note with consecutive wins just a few months ago. That along with his Presidents Cup victory will carry over to this matchup making Finau a winner.
Harris English +113 vs. Adam Hadwin
I have confidence in English to back him in the outright market so I might as well throw down on him in this matchup. And his price makes the move even better. It’s not easy walking a golf course after hip surgery and it appears as though English is starting to get back in a groove. He enjoyed a prolific season in 2020-21 with a pair of wins before the pain became unbearable. He had surgery earlier this year missing several months. But his return has gotten stronger with each event, including a T9 at the season-opening Fortinet Championship.
Sepp Straka +124 vs. Aaron Rai
I didn’t purposefully back a bunch of plus-odds underdogs it just turned out that way. But I like my chances of having a big week, especially if Straka is on point. The prototypical boom or bust player, Straka is either going to miss the cut or contend for the title with not much wiggle room in between. He has a history at El Camaleon that’s seen him get better in each of his three starts with a 33 and 52 after a MC in his debut.
