With just a few tournaments remaining before the PGA Tour breaks for the Holidays, valuable FedExCup points are on the line when the field heads south of the border for this week’s World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. After most of the big timers took last week off, we get an infusion of talent with the likes of betting favorite Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau and Collin Morikawa ready to peg it up. The real story, however, involves Viktor Hovland and his quest to join elite company. Only a handful of players have ever had the hat trick at an event and nobody has done it in over a decade. Hovland thrives in tropical locations and goes for a third straight win at El Camaleon Golf Course as the second favorite on the betting board. Odds Analysis
Harris English +6600
English appears to be rounding into form after missing several months earlier in the year to have hip surgery. Before going under the knife he was enjoying a nice run with a pair of victories two seasons ago to earn a spot on the Ryder Cup team. It was a long road back and English is encouraged by his recent outings that include a top-10 in Napa. He won here in 2013 and backed up top-5s in his two most recent trips. Feeling better on a course that’s yielded him success makes English a great value play at his price.
Tony Finau +1600
I’ve been a fan of Finau’s for some time and was a little reluctant to throw down on him since this is his season debut. But I liked how he closed last season winning back-to-back tournaments then earning a top-5 before finishing ninth at the TOUR Championship. He has a relationship with El Camaleon earning a trio of top-16s in six starts and a week at a resort course will probably feel like an extension of his off time. Finau is always ready to play and he will be this week.
Viktor Hovland +1000
It’s hard to go back-to-back at a tournament but Hovland has already done that. Now with a chance to join an exclusive club he should be amped. And taking a peek at his past successes gives me ample reason to believe it can be done. His third Tour victory came in Puerto Rico and he also prevailed at last year’s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. Are you noticing a trend? I am and I’m not afraid to act on it.
Collin Morikawa +1800
A brilliant start to his PGA career set unreal expectations for Morikawa. Comparatively speaking last season wasn’t very good, but not very good for Collin is a lot different than it is for most other players. In the 15 tournaments he finished, eight of them yielded a top-10 with a pair of runner-up showings. He placed outside the top-25 in both starts this season, but his history in Mexico gives me hope. He competed three times as an amateur winning the 2018 Cabo Collegiate.
Sepp Straka +7500
Since I’m backing guys at the top of the odds board it’s time to take a look further down the list. One guy that could be a sleeper is Straka, who’s been streaky over the past few years. He missed a lot of cuts last season but he also had a win and two additional podium finishes as part of his five top-5s. He’s gotten consistently better results in this event over the last three years and if he’s on contention is definitely on the menu.
Course: El Camaleon Golf Club – 7,034 yards, par 71
El Camaleon opened in 2004 and has hosted every tournament since its inception in 2007. Additional yardage was added over the last few years stretching the course to 7,034 yards at par 71. It’s still considered short by Tour standards and there is no need for massive drives. There are few courses on Tour where accuracy plays better than distance and this is one of them. The fairways are forgiving, but go too wide and the numbers can climb quickly with water, forests and swampland on the outer edges. Over par holes are usually well over par with this layout owning a high percentage of doubles or worse. There are just a few, however. El Camaleon is a resort course and hasn’t offered much resistance over the years with winning scores routinely in the 20-under range.
