With only a few tournaments remaining on the FedExCup fall schedule, the PGA Tour heads back to Mexico for the third time this season for the World Wide Technology Championship. The 17th edition of this event brings a new venue into the mix for the first time with the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas serving as host. Few if any in the 132-player field are familiar with the layout meaning there is no history to lean on. And previous winners south of the border aren’t competing. Like most events that take place in the fall the event lacks big-name players, however a number of golfers have wins already this season. In search of his first PGA Title, Ludvig Aberg opened as the betting favorite in the outright market with Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala rounding out the top three. Need to Know
After 16 years at El Camaleon Golf Club the Tour abandoned the only host the event ever had due to a conflict with LIV Golf. Yep, the Saudi-backed rival booked one of its events at the property earlier in the year and the PGA said adios opting for the resort course designed by Tiger Woods’ firm. Opened in 2014 El Cardonal is a few hundred yards longer than its predecessor measuring 7,452 yards from the tips. While there is more turf to navigate the layout is similar. Open fairways and large greens are always inviting so I don’t expect scores to be much different. We routinely saw winners in the 20-under range at the other venue with Viktor Hovland and Russell Henley establishing tournament scoring records in the previous two events.
World Wide Technology Championship Matchup Picks
Sahith Theegala +125 vs. Ludvig Aberg
The good thing about betting against the favorite is that you can get his matchup opponent at a good price. That bad thing is that you’re betting against the favorite. Aberg is still getting props for his Ryder Cup performance while Theegala has been a consistent contender on Tour for over a year. And Theegala recently earned his first win as part of a run that consisted of four straight top 20s. I’ll gladly back him at this price.
Akshay Bhatia +106 vs. Adam Svensson
Catching exceptional golfers at plus odds is a gift and with Bhatia’s background and experience on tropical resort courses it’s hard not to back him. He ranks among the best in several categories off the tee, which will come in handy on a long, open layout. He also has a runner-up in Puerto Rico and a solo fourth at the Mexico Open from earlier this year.
JJ Spaun -115 vs. Emiliano Grillo
If Spaun can find a comfort zone with his putter he could be in contention. That’s been his only weakness and it’s not even a huge deal. The rest of his game fits well into the layout and I had a desire to back him in the outright, though I eventually decided against it. However, I have no issues throwing down in this matchup especially after an impressive T6 at the ZOZO Championship last time out.
Lucas Glover +114 vs. Beau Hossler
If Glover can resume playing the way he did a few months ago this pick is a steal. He was one of the hottest golfers on Tour with consecutive wins at the Wyndham and FedEx St. Jude Championships capping a stretch of five top 6 finishes in six starts. The only concern is that he hasn’t pegged it up since the TOUR Championship two months ago.
Henrik Norlander +106 vs. Harry Hall
I won matchups in the past with Norlander and seeing his game round into form gives me confidence he can win for me again. It’s been hit or miss for the Swede most of the season making just over half the cuts in his 29 starts. When he finishes he’s usually pretty good with six top 25s on his resume. He reached a playoff with four other golfers at the Sanderson Farms Championship eventually losing out on the title and followed that with a T35 at the Shriners.
