We don’t often see the PGA Tour take time off, but it did last week setting the stage for a return trip to Mexico for the 18th edition of the World Wide Technology Championship. For the second straight year the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante Resort in Los Cabos will serve as host. The layout wasn’t a problem last year for Erik van Rooyen, who set a tournament scoring record to win his second career PGA title. Van Rooyen is back to defend his title, though he sits behind several other golfers on the outright odds board. Max Greyserman opened as the favorite but odds suggest a wide open field opening up several possibilities when it comes to tournament matchups. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
After 16 years at El Camaleon Golf Club the Tour abandoned the only host the event had ever known over a conflict with LIV Golf. The Saudi-backed rival booked one of its events at the property in 2023 and the PGA said adios, opting for the resort course designed by Tiger Woods’ firm. Opened in 2014 El Cardonal is longer than its predecessor measuring 7,452 yards from the tips. While there is more turf to navigate the layout is similar. Open fairways and large greens are always inviting for the pros as evidenced last year when nine players finished at 20-under or better. There are hazards at Tigers’ joint, though. A drastic elevation drop between the 17th tee and third fairway can take a toll on players and caddies. And we will see wind come into play.
World Wide Technology Championship Matchup Picks
Beau Hossler +127 vs. Doug Ghim
He’s yet to win on Tour, but Hossler has come close several times with three career runner-up finishes, the most recent last month at the Sanderson Farms Championship as part of four top 25s in a five-start stretch. He was playing well last year leading up to this event having secured a T2 and T7 before earning a share of 15th at El Cardonal. He has a formidable opponent, but Hossler tamed this layout on a run of good form and at his price I’ll back him to do it again.
Erik Van Rooyen +119 vs. Tom Hoge
No one did it better than van Rooyen at the inaugural El Cardonal event, which is enough for me to back him in this matchup. His price also helps in the decision-making process. The South African has been able to avoid prolonged slumps racking up nine top 25s worldwide with four of them putting him in the top 10. He was masterful on this course last year with rounds of 63 and 64 and nothing higher than 68.
J.J. Spaun -107 vs. Ben Griffin
The second half of the season has been much better than the first for Spaun, who collected all six top 25s in the last 11 Tour events. Most recently he had a T6 at the ZOZO and checks all the boxes for success at Tigers’ layout. A third round 73 dropped him down the leaderboard last year, but Spaun has been as consistent as ever over the past two months with success written all over.
Matt Kuchar -114 vs. Keith Mitchell
The veteran Kuchar is having a career resurgence at the end of 2024 with four top 15s in his last six starts. The run started with a T3 at the 3M Open and most recently Kooch was T14 at the Shriners. Add that to plenty of success at this tournament and Kuchar is a solid bet. He was runner-up at El Cardonal last year while boasting a win and four additional top 25s at Mayakoba.
Joe Highsmith -119 vs. K.H. Lee
Using the FedExCup Fall to improve his game, Highsmith has done just that. The rookie struggled all season until a breakthrough at the Procore Championship started a nice little run. Despite a closing 73, Highsmith finished with a share of 13th and has captured two other top 20s since with a best of T6 at the Black Desert Championship.
