We probably won’t see a lot of Tiger Woods in the future with injuries and age taking a toll on his playing career. But his lasting legacy on the PGA Tour will live on and even more so at the World Wide Technology Championship since the tournament is played on a Woods-designed course. For the second time the field will navigate the El Cardonal golf course at the Diamante Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with Erik Van Rooyen back to defend his title. There are only three events left on the FedExCup Fall schedule with plenty on the line for a number of players looking to gain status for the 2025 season. There is no clear-cut favorite in the wide-open field with Max Greyserman listed as the betting favorite with a large chunk of the field not far behind. Odds Analysis
Cameron Champ +8000
There isn’t much to suggest Champ will break out of an extended slump. But if he’s going to this is the type of venue that will help him. The long track with wide open fairways and enormous greens are perfect for a guy that can blast the ball. And we’ve seen champ have some of his better outings recently in Mexico. Earlier in the year Champ secured a top 25 finish at the Mexico Open and he produces occasionally like he did with a T13 at the 3M Open. He does have three PGA titles on his resume so this isn’t as long of a shot as you might think.
Harris English +3000
Though it’s a different course one could argue that El Cardonal is easier than its predecessor. And that’s good news for backing English, who had a win and two additional top 5s at El Camaleon. And English comes in riding some good form with a T6 in southern Utah and T9 at the Shriners. Those two very different layouts remind us that English has a game that translates to difference venues so his first here should be a good one.
Henrik Norlander +7500
I went further down the odds list with Champ and Norlander with a field like the one assembled here leading to a big odds payout. Van Rooyen was around +6500 last year and won by two swings setting a scoring record. He had a MC at Tiger’s place last year, but Norlander has upped his game with six top 25s overall since June with his last two putting him among the top 8. He cooled off in the second half of the Omega European Masters and opened the Black Desert Championship with a sizzling 62 before slipping.
Erik Van Rooyen +3300
It’s hard to repeat but van Rooyen was on fire last year closing with a 63 to win by a pair of shots. He’s been on and off this season and he looks to be regaining the form from earlier this year that brought him five top 25s, including a runner-up at the Cognizant Classic, in a six-start stretch.
Cameron Young +2000
Back in action for the first time in over two months could be good or bad depending on how Young handles himself. He should be well rested for another go on this layout that he mastered for two rounds last year. Young opened with a 65 and closed with a 64, but the middle rounds were his undoing as he finished 12 shots off the pace. He had six top 10s on Tour this season with another in his only start on the DP World Tour. And like most golfers in the field, Young won’t have a problem navigating the layout.
Course: El Cardonal at Diamante – 7,452 yards, par 72
Located within the Diamante Cabo San Lucas resort, El Cardonal opened in 2014 and is the first course completed by Woods and his team. “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices,” Tiger said about the layout. It’s a huge course at a little under 7,500 yards with wide fairways and massive greens. From the outside it doesn’t appear to be overwhelming, however swirling winds will play tricks with golf balls and a drastic elevation shift of over 200 feet from the 17th tee to the third fairway can get the best of anyone. Going off at 65/1 last year, van Rooyen manipulated the course to a tournament scoring record 27-under 261 beating a pair of golfers by two swings for his second career PGA Tour victory.
