With a number of the PGA Tour’s more high-profile players already secured a spot in the FedExCup playoffs that start next week, the field for the regular season finale Wyndham Championship is a bit watered down. Some of those golfers needed a breather after the thrilling conclusion at the Olympics, too. The importance of a good finish isn’t lost on any of the competitors, though, with a number of players looking to maintain their standing within the top 70 while others will be looking to squeeze into the playoff field. Established as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938, the tournament hasn’t had a repeat titlist since the 1950s and Lucas Glover is next in line to end that streak. However, he’s positioned well down the odds board with Sungjae Im the early outright betting favorite for a third consecutive year. Need to Know
One thing to note is the race for the FedEx Cup playoffs. A number of golfers are on the bubble while others will try to solidify or improve their ranking. The number of players advancing to the FedExCup players was slashed from 125 to 70 a few years ago leaving several players without the opportunity to play for the FedEx championship, though the golfers not advancing still have something to play for on a course that’s forgiving. Sedgefield Country Club is a short 7,131-yard, par-70 that plays straightforward and is one of the easiest par 70s on Tour. Henrik Stenson (2017) and J.T. Poston (2019) own the tournament 72-hole scoring record at 258 and eight of the previous nine winners finished at 20-under or better. The course isn’t going to scare anyone but there are some roadblocks. Water is present on a number of holes while doglegs and small, undulating greens will be a test. The biggest stat this week is accuracy. Stay clean off the tee while avoiding the water and chances of scoring low improve.
Wyndham Championship Matchup Picks
Sungjae Im -130 vs. Si Woo Kim
There’s never a sure thing when it comes to gambling, but Im performing well at Sedgefield is about as close as it gets. I feel so good about his chances that I’m going to eat the price and back him because of his history in this tournament and a run of good form heading in. During his career Im has three top 10s, a T14 and T24 in five visits. He also has a win among seven top 10s in his last 11 starts worldwide.
Cam Davis -105 vs. Jordan Spieth
I do hope Spieth breaks out of his funk soon, just not this week. So instead Davis is my pick in this head-to-head. He’s perfect in this event debuting with a T22 and getting progressively better results capped by a T7 in last year’s edition. And Davis has been solid since winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in June collecting a T26 in the Genesis Scottish Open and T19 in the 3M Open. He’s just been playing better than Spieth and that makes all the difference.
Akshay Bhatia -105 vs. Davis Thompson
Timing is everything and now is the time Bhatia breaks through in this event. A native of the Carolinas Bhatia has yet to enjoy success in this tournament with three MCs in as many starts. He’s too good to continue struggling and a recent stretch of four straight top 25s that included a pair of top 5s has to boost his confidence on a course that hasn’t done much for him.
Cameron Young +121 vs. Brian Harman
Young played collegiately at Wake Forest so he’s no stranger to the area, though he is making his debut in the Wyndham. One strong part of his game is negated by the length of the course, but Young has excelled recently in his short game with pinpoint accuracy, both necessary for success on this layout. And after a short mid-season lull, Young picked things up again with consecutive top 10s in the Travelers and RMC.
Patrick Fishburn -115 vs. Patrick Rodgers
The door is open just slightly, but at least it’s open. Sitting at No. 101 in the FedExCup standings, Fishburn needs a solo second to qualify for the playoffs. It’s not an enviable position and Fishburn can let it hang out with hopes of possibly playing next week. You can’t argue with recent form making a solid run more probable. He went T6-3-15 in his last three starts and has two additional top 25s in his last six events.
