Wyndham Championship PGA Odds

The last tournament of the regular season sends the PGA Tour to Greensboro, North Carolina, for this week’s Wyndham Championship. After a thrilling run for the gold medal in Paris a number of Olympians are scheduled to peg it up, including Shane Lowry, who has the shortest opening odds of any Olympic competitor. A recent change in the format has the top 70 in the FedExCup standings headed to the playoffs starting next week and a number of players on the bubble will attempt to earn the required number of points to advance. At No. 9 in the FedExCup race, Sungjae Im is moving on and opened as the betting favorite for the third straight year. Im was runner-up in 2022 and T14 last year, and he’s placed among the top 25 in all five starts. Odds suggest a wide open field and you can visit BookMaker.eu for an updated list when you’re ready to place a wager.

Odds Analysis

Billy Horschel +2200

I like Horschel’s history at Sedgefield and his last start was a co-runner-up at The Open, so he has a lot going for him. In his last seven Wyndham starts he’s finished among the top 11 five times. Horschel was runner-up in 2020 losing by a stroke and was four shots off the lead last year for solo fourth. He also ended a mini slump with his T2 at Royal Troon where he was the only player to score below 70 in each of the final three rounds.

Sungjae Im +1400

There are good reasons why Im is the betting favorite and they are enough to convince me. I typically don’t back the favorite but the odds are long enough to make it worth the risk. He’s been really good in this tournament finishing no worse than T24 in five career starts with a runner-up two years ago and two additional top 10s. Over his last 11 starts including a win on the Korean Tour in April, Im has seven top 10s and two other T12s. I’d say he’s in good shape.

Kurt Kitayama +4500

I’m backing Kitayama in the outright for the simple reason that he needs a good showing to quality for the playoffs. He currently sits at No. 74 in the standings and doesn’t necessarily need a win, but I do expect him to be on top of his game. He’s making his debut in this event but the course shouldn’t be a distraction. He rebounded from an opening 77 at Royal Troon to finish T41 and carried that over to the 3M Open with his best finish of the season at T6.

Victor Perez +6500

It looks as though I backed the wrong Frenchman at the Olympics. I didn’t have Perez and his spirited run to the podium had the crowd in a frenzy. Perez eventually fell a shot short of the bronze but what a closing stretch he had. And if I had been paying attentions a solid run of form over the last two months should’ve been enough. Over that span he had a solo third in Canada and a top 10 at the Genesis Scottish Open leading up to his medal run in Paris.

J.T. Poston +6000

I’m counting on Poston’s history at Sedgefield overriding his current form. One of his two PGA Tour wins came at this joint in 2019 when he closed with a 62 to win by one swing. In 2022 he earned a top 25 and last year he scored 68 or lower in all four rounds to earn a share of seventh. Poston has seven top 20s this season but hasn’t secured one since the Schwab in May. Visiting a course that’s treated him well should help Poston find his game.

Course: Sedgefield Country Club – 7,131 yards, Par 70

Sedgefield Country Club enters its 17th year hosting the Wyndham Championship. Playing at 7,131 yards, the layout is short by Tour standards making driving distance a non-factor. In 2017 Henrik Stenson played without a driver in his bag. And proving the point, he won the tournament with a record 22-under 258, which was matched by J.T. Poston two years later. Accuracy is key with the field averaging better than 80 percent GIR from the fairways with a significant decline when hitting from the rough. However, the course has its challenges with numerous water hazards, doglegs and small undulating greens to test the patience of everyone. Last year. Lucas Glover ended a 2-year PGA title drought and moved into the playoffs with a 2-shot victory. The following week Glover won the FedEx St. Jude Championship in extra holes. Seven of the previous eight winners finished at 20-under or better.
